Hello Friends,
I am facing a very wierd problem with this assembly. It is a windows application which will be deployed in a remote machine.
Problem is with Imports Microsoft.Practices.EnterpriseLibrary.Data
I am using this assembly for creating a database object as
Dim db As Database = DatabaseFactory.CreateDatabase("<instance name="">")
Then am using a DataReader to read database table rows
Program is throwing exception for very first record when it tries to run dr = db.ExecuteReader(CommandType.Text, sqlstr) statement on the remote client machine and but it works fine at my development machine.
The error that the program is catching in "Access denied to write to event log" though the program is not writing anything to eventlog.
Could it be some other error that the program is throwing which is bubbling up to this error?
I have not found any solution as of yet.
Need all your expertise on this. Pleeeeeeeeeeeease helpppp.

Does anyone here know of either an ABNF to Regex converter (that works and is not written in some 'other' language  ) or perhaps a DotNet library that can take ABNF and do matches like using the built in Regex methods?
I need to write some parsers for some SIP messages and would love to use the SIP RFC and the ABNF notation in there to get the job done.

i have installed an application on pc, when i run this application the application is shown in task manager but does not run actually.this application is made in .Net and works well on other machines.

if it's in the task manager, it's running. It's just not showing for some reason. Impossible to answer based on this lack of info.

how about an exception inside the main form's constructor?
add a general try-catch in there, and show (Console.WriteLine) the entire exception,
i.e. use Exception.ToString().

Hi.
When i open my solution in vs2008 i get the following error:
"package 'visual studio explorer and designers package' has failed to load properly (GUID {XXXX....})"
When i try to build my solution, i get an error saying: "External component has thrown an exception."
I have tried googling the solution (uninstalling duplicate.outdated assemblies from "C:\WINDOWS\assembly" but it does not allow me to).
Can anyone help please?

At first glance I would say their is an overlapping GUID that is used by multiple applications. GUIDs need to be unique from all other applications installed on the system. I would try reinstalling/repairing the installation of Visual Studio 2008.

Hi All,
I wanted to install the .NET 1.1 (or any new version) on remote machine and that also in silent mode. The one option I have is to develop the Windows Service in VC++, install it on remote machine and through this service install the .NET Framework but I wanted to avoid this approach.
If anyone know how to do it or have any good URL which explains this then please let me know.

Well you need to figure out which one specifically because the installs can be different. Once you figure that out then you can find information on MSDN like this for 2.0[^]

We have added .net framework 3.5 as prerequisite in the installshield. But to install .net framwork it will require windows installer 3.1. Therfore we want to add windows installer 3.1 as prerequisite.
We have windows installer 3.1 ki redistributable exe but dont have prerequisite file.
how to add windows installer 3.1 prerequisite to installshield ?
and how to tell installshield that first check that whether the windows installer 3.1 is present or not?

Installshield is a 3rd party product, not part of the .NET framework. Perhaps you might ask this question in their forum.

I want to stop a dll from installing if it is already there, I have .NET 2005, do I have to do something in the conditions side. If so what do I need to put there to stop it, and how do I go about making a condition.

In a VS2005 Installer project when you click in the "Condition" property of the file the help at the bottom of the property view says it is a "Windows Installer Condition". So if one goes to MSDN one can find the Windows Installer Guide[^] and proceeding from there one can find Conditional Statement Syntax[^] and also Examples of Conditional Statement Syntax[^].
There is much more there as well but I'm moving on now. Good luck

The issue that I am getting, is the following:
When I run the setup program, I get the error:
The windows installer service cannot update the system file C:\Windows\system32\msvcrt.dll because the file is protected by Windows....
What do I have to do in the setup program to stop thins error from coming up?

Windows Installer packages should always 'install' every component that they include. The Windows Installer runtime will decide whether or not to install a file. It records every package that installs a component and only removes the component when no references remain.
Be very aware that Windows Installer makes these decisions on a component GUID basis, not by using file paths. If one file has a different GUID in different packages, when one is uninstalled, Windows Installer will decide that the file is no longer used and will remove it, breaking the other installation.
For this reason any shared files installed to the same location should always have the same GUID. The only way to do this in Visual Studio's setup packages, that I'm aware of, is to create a Merge Module containing the shared components and include that Merge Module in all install packages.
I believe Windows Installer counts references to assemblies installed in the GAC separately, so I think it's safe to install the same assembly to the GAC using different references. Still, it's better to follow the same pattern throughout.
In general, you should follow the supplier's advice for installing any third-party components. That may well mean running their installer before yours.
Best practice in my view is to install everything into your own private binary folder. You should avoid strong naming, in my opinion, as that will cause lookups in the GAC even if the file is in the binary folder. If you aren't versioning your assemblies correctly, an administrator can break your application by putting the assembly in the GAC, as the GAC takes precedence over local folders for strong-named assemblies.

Hello guys.
I'm working on a Windows Forms project for one of my clients, he wants to be able to type in lists of items and be able to apply several bullet styles and well as numbering to the lists, much like Word does.
I wonder if there's an easy way to implement this using a Rich Text Box, or otherwise embedding a Word instance in a form using OLE and be able to save the typed text as RTF.
¿Anyone faced similar challenges before?

Hi there.
Not sure if this is correct messageboard, so sorry if it's isn't.
I have recently started using INtrexx Extreme at work to create portals and applications. While designing these there is a button to view your work in a browser.
When i do this, i get a browser which just says 'Service Unavailable'.
If I go into IIS and browse the website, it brings the same thing up.
I found a thread online that say's if you go into the properties of the 'My Websites' folder and check the box 'Run WWW service in IIS 5.0 isolation mode'. When I do this it solves the 'Service Unavailable' problem (although a cross appears next to the 'My Websites' folder) but when i try to view the default site again it just brings up the page cannot be displayed message.
My internet connection is working, just incase anyone thought of that.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Someone please save my sanity.
The .Net framework replaced COM concepts with GAC concepts, which I am very thankfull for. I have now written some dlls that I would like to deploy to the GAC, and I am about to burst into tears.
COM is out and GAC is in, yet when you create a deployment package it has options to install a dll to COM but not to the GAC...
Please tell me there is a way to deploy dlls to the GAC that does not involve stretching GACUTIL.EXE further than it was intended, or any user intervention for that matter. In other words automated deployment...

You probably don't actually want to install to the GAC. Installing is much safer and easier if every program has its own copy of any dependencies, and you run no risk of versioning problems.
Unfortunately if any of your dependencies have strong names (signed with a private key, to give the assembly a PublicKeyToken property) the runtime looks in the GAC before it looks in your local folders. Another installation could put an incompatible version in the GAC that would override your local copy, if it had the same assembly version number (or if the publisher used Publisher Policy to override the version used).
You also have a different servicing problem - if a third-party component has a security problem, you would have to redistribute a new version of your program, because they will be unable, typically, to detect the presence of their library in your private installation folder. You may want this level of control if they haven't fully managed compatibility with their previous version, though.
Anyway, if you really want to do it, you have to use a Windows Installer package such as Visual Studio's deployment package. To install to the GAC from Visual Studio, open the File System Editor in your setup project, right-click the root (File System on Target Machine) and select Add Special Folder, Global Assembly Cache Folder. You can now drop the assemblies in here. If you want them somewhere else as well you will need to add an extra copy.
