I am currently evaluating SSL components from IPWorks to
implement https protocol for client-server communication.
But it is a bit expensive, do anyone have any experience on using it
or are there any other cheaper component for SSL communication ?

I was wondering if any has info on the undocumented menu control messages, similar to the button messages: BM_CLICK, etc.
I found a really simple way to subclass the menu by changing its windows-class wnd proc.
First create an invisible menu window with the class name of "#32768" called from the CMainFrame's OnCreate, using it as a parent:
hwnd = CreateWindow( "#32768", "", WS_CHILD, 0,0,10,10,
pParent->m_hWnd, (HMENU) 0, AfxGetInstanceHandle(), &cs );
Then replace the window-class wnd proc with your own:
s_OldWindowProc = (WNDPROC) SetClassLong( hwnd,
GCL_WNDPROC, (DWORD) WindowProc );
Then destroy the window because you don't need it anymore - all menus in your app have the same class wnd proc.
In your "WindowProc" you send all the messages to the orginal class proc using CallWindowProc().
Here are the messages and what they seem to do:
0x000001E5: -Draw mouseover item and send statusbar msg.
0x000001EF: -Send out the command msg
0x000001E4: -End of popup menu
0x000001ED: -Process lbuttondown, draw pressed item, send statusbar msg
0x000001EB: -Handles when to send the command and terminate the popup
Now I think I have enough to override all the drawing so I can replace it with my own, while maintaining full menu functionality, even though I have to use LockWindowsUpdate() to prevent drawing on 0x01E5 and 0x01ED, while calling the orginal proc.
But it would be great to get the message names and the info they have in the Params, which would make skinning the menus a lot easier. Any help or info on where I can this information would be greatly appreciated.

I have a program which shuts a system down with the following:-
rc = ExitWindowsEx(EWX_SHUTDOWN | EWX_FORCE, 0);
pApp->LogString("Completed shutdown");
if (!rc)
dwError = GetLastError();
I suppose about half the time, this code operates on the Win98 system without a problem and shuts down O.K. However, on other occasions it hangs. Is this a known problem with Win98 ?? - I believe the O/S is up to date. Any ideas would be appreciated !

Thanks for the response - I had already seen the quoted text but, at the time, decided that (within my usage) there was no "data" to be lost. It's some time since I tried it without the EWX_FORCE flag so the following may be entirely wrong, but I've got a feeling I end up with the "Enter Windows Password dialog box, and I didn't know how to "terminate the explorer process". Can you explain how I would go about that ? Incidently (and I forgot to post this originally), when the shut down DOES fail/hang, there is just a desktop background without any icons, taskbar, etc. Anyhow, I'll try it again without the EWX_FORCE flag to refresh my memory ! Appreciate any help with the termination of the Windows Password dialog though !

I have now removed the EWX_FORCE flag and, on this occasion, no 'hang' occured. However the problem (without use of the flag)is when there is a network connection - during the shutdown process, a dialog appears stating that 'n' users are connected and proceeding will cause their disconnection; the dialog ultimately requests confirmation that shutdown should continue. How do I avoid this dialog without using the EWX_FORCE flag (assuming that that is the cause of the 'hang' during shutdown) Thanks in advance for any help on this !

I think your major problem is Win98 itself. It will sometimes (frequently) hang even when you use the Start->Shutdown->Shutdown commands. I believe it is a bug in the OS and there is not much you can do about it.
The problem I have with EWX_FORCE is that it suppresses the usual shutdown sequence that many apps use, and simply kills them. I would be very annoyed if any app that I had installed on my machine did that. If you feel you must use it go ahead, just seems very extreme to me.
As for the dialogs that popup, you could use a CBT_HOOK to catch any windows that are created while your code is running, and simply send a WM_CLOSE message to them. Just a suggestion, I do not know if it work or not.

Hi,
I'm trying to prevent certain Microsoft Platform SDK headers from being included into my project. Is there a view that shows the list of files as the compiler is compiling them, along with the header files that get included in the compile process? The output view that the compiler show is not detailed enough, it doesn't show which file actually #include a file.

Are you using MS Visual Studio? What version?
In Studio 2003, you can go to Project Properties, C/C++, Advanced and change "Show Includes" to "Yes".

I'm trying to pass a BYTE array in a winsock send function. Before I send this string I need to add a hex 00 and a hex 04 respectively, to the end of the string. I'm doing it this way:

When the other end of this socket connection receives this string the hex 00 and hex 04 are not there. Am I missing something here?

You're putting the new characters in the wrong spot. They should be at strlen(mySQLData) and strlen(mySQLData)+1 respectively, otherwise you'll have your string followed by two 00 characters and then a 04 character.
Also, how is the receiver getting the data? It may not be receiving the string correctly.

Not quite sure since it's someone else's app. But I do have it working when using a non-SQL database. Our main application database is a C-ISAM database (COBOL)(we have two versions of our app a SQL version and a C-ISAM version)(We are moving away from the C-ISAM version). I write interfaces between COBOL and other applications. This particular interface is a socket connection between our SQL app version and a third party application.

Hi everybody. Here's a nice challange. I've been fighting with this for over a year now. Every now and then, when I got time, I keep coming back to this problem. I`m only a begginer in programming but if anybody here can help me with this, I`ll gladly donate to the comunity an entire article about this mess. What mess? Well.. working with the "TrayClockWClass" window. This is the systray clock window.
It can be found by searching for the taskbar first, window class "Shell_TrayWnd". Then for the entire systray area (including systray icons)... "TrayNotifyWnd". And then the clock is window class "TrayClockWClass". All easy with FindWindowEx.
But hey... how can "TrayClockWClass" be resized??? It's standard size is about 50...100 pixels or something like this. What if I want to make it 300 pixels? Anybody know that??? Or I`m forced to spend another year poking around API and Windows to find the answer : ).

You should be able to resize it by using MoveWindow() or SetWindowPos(). However, if Windows was smart, it would disallow the size change by handling WM_SIZE and set the size to whatever it thinks it should be. After all, the size of the clock window determines the layout of the taskbar, and we wouldn't want to go breaking it, would we?

Hi Ryan : ). Thanks for answering.... Yes. You're right. I succeeded in moving that window and thus resizing it. The problem is that, of course, the other task bar areas have to be resized as well, so nothing gets messed up. I did that too. But the problem is that when you move the task bar to another location, everything is automatically restored to normal. I beleive this might be corrected by installing a hook and capturing messages sent to the systray by explorer.exe which is the parent process.
However, this is just an idea, I don't really know how to do it. I can do hooks for keyboard or mouse but... windows messages are still a mistery for me : (. Do you have any idea about that?

Have a look at the WH_GETMESSAGE hook type. It will get called every time a message is retrieved using the GetMessage() function. A word of warning though... Make sure this is a thread-specific hook, otherwise you will slow down the system a phenomenal amount. Also, AFAIR this won't intercept any message retrieved using PeekMessage().
Also, you could look at the WH_CBT hook type - it will inform you of various events that happen to windows. If it does what you want, it's definitely the better one to use.
Again, if you do use a hook, make sure it's a thread-specific hook. System-wide hooks are notorious for making a P4 behave like a 386, similar to anything Java

Well... let me give you more details. What I`m trying to do is replace the Windows clock with a window made by me. Now... I already did this. Partially. I can put my window there, I can do some resizing... but when the scrollbar is moved, bye bye blue sky : ). Even when the time changes I get some surprises (my window dissapears beneath the clock).
Anywayz, I think I have to install this hook ONLY on explorer.exe... because in the end, I`m only interested in the messages that the systray clock window receives. And then probably (now I`m just thinking without knowing if it's really like this) I can see when explorer.exe tells the clock to resize or repaint and tell my window to repaint before.
So two questions related to this... how can I find out the Thread ID of Explorer.exe so I can hook it? : ). And how can I block those messages of ever reaching the original clock window? That would be even better if it would be possible...

If you've got the window handle, use GetWindowThreadId()
