hi..
i need your help...
i need a project to work on..i have some free time and i wanna make a project...
i am thinking of programming windows using C#..
i want to make a project that will get me an all round tour of windows programming and C#..so that i can code in different areas of windows and c#..
hopefully i want to involve topics such as security,web-based communication,encryption etc.
if you guys can gimme a suggestion for a topic i will be very glad..
i dont really like graphics though..and prefer not working with it..unless its a necessary part of windows programming that is required for some important purpose...\
hope u can gimme some suggestions..
tks a lot

Sounds like you need something web-based involving uploads and secure logins or something like that. I suggest you look at some of the articles on this site. You might get some good ideas that way, and you'll certainly find some good tutorials on those subjects.
It's a bit hard to find a project that will cover the full range of areas of Windows programming, BTW. But you might find that you can cover most of them in, say, 3 different projects.

Hi,
Iam looking for the source code of "ShowDLL or Process Explorer" kind of system utility tools.Please send the link to the resource where i could get this.
Thanks,

Why is it that C++ cannot utilize a DLL authored in Visual Basic? Is there somebody out there who is mixed language savvy enough to address this issue in an article? I'd be very interested in interfacing between the two or learning how VB / C++ can exchange delimited strings via Winsock / CSocket.
Any ideas?

I do this all the time.
#import "c:\path\to\my\vb.dll" rename_namespace("WHATEVER")
Then simply use
WHATEVER::MyObjectPtr pObj = NULL;
try
{
HRESULT hr = pObj.CreateInstance( __uuidof(WHATEVER::MyObject) );
if (FAILED(hr))
{
_com_issue_error(hr);
}
pObj->DoStuff();
}
catch (_com_error& e)
{
}
You still want an article?

Cool! #import looks like a powerful directive, but how can it allow me to reference the VB DLL's method? Specifically, my VB DLL has one string function, "Execute", which accepts a string as an argument. So I'm not surprised to see the compiler complain that MyObjectPtr is not a member of WHATEVER. But when I replace "MyObjectPtr" with "Execute" I still get the same complaint.
I really appreciate your help Tom. Thanks in advance for any insight you might wish to share.
Haha! Yeah, maybe a short article. You can bet I'm going to create a few notes of my own if I ever get this approach to work.

Short answer...
You can use BSTR, CComBSTR, or _bstr_t datatypes to transmit strings over COM. I like _bstr_t the best because you can easily use any string and cast it to a _bstr_t without worrying about memory allocation. Confused? Don't be. A little bit of reading should clear up your questions.
The long answer...
I will put this in an article. I don't know when I'll get it done. But I'll shoot for this weekend.

I have made better progress, but I seem to be up against a wall with this particular error:
warning C4042: '_IID' : has bad storage class
It doesn't seem to make any difference what type I define in VB to pass/return to/from the DLL. Byte, Integer, String, Variant -- all yield the same error.

hello karl
well the VB's DLL is a ActiveX DLL which supports the COM
so the functions exported by the VB's DLL can be called through the VB program.
But You can call Funtion from DLL of C++ through VB
so do not worry abt calling the VB's DLL through C++
and remove it from your mind

I was wondering if anyone knows of any good tutorials out there on this? I got the exchange 200 SDK, and it is all VS 5 and 6 stuff. In particular, I am trying to discover, how to connect to exchange, and to send and receive messages.
The reason for this, is that I want to build on the webaccess provided with Exchange.
Thanks

Hi
Somebody knows if there is a class to do something similar to the Planning option in Lotus organizer?
It would be nice to have a Task yearly scheduling to add to the projects.

That would be a great article. If it does exist, I haven't found it yet...
I'm sure given an infinite amount of time, I could figure it out myself, based on the scattered docs and articles out there. But what I'm talking about is something that takes a project template, and has a couple of options that allow you to tweak the template to get a base project in.
With a good explanation of what everything does, why it's there, etc.

there are some hidden registry entries for the Button3D effects (ButtonShadow, ButtonLight, ButtonDkShadow, ButtonHilight) to change the their colours. is there any possibility to get rid off them and the 1 pixel wide windowborder globally?
|
|
|
|
|
You can change their colors or remove them, but it affects the entire system, so it's not something you want to do without warning the user.

Hello,
I am trying to make VC++ 6.0 Intellisense more "intelligent", by supplying to it a collection of .ncb files I've created, that contain definitions for my classes (Symbian C++), as Intellisense relies on these files (C/C++ databases as they're internally called) in order to provide code completion (list members, parameter info, etc).
The problem is that even if I place the files in the MSDev98/Common/Bin folder and create the proper registry values for them (do a search in your registry for WIN32.NCB and you'll find the right keys), the IDE does not use them.
Is there a FREE plugin that will allow me to do simple code completion; I do not want all the bell and whistles Visual Assist has nor I have the money to buy it.
Many thanks in advance.

Most of you dont know, but there is a good alternative to Crystal Reports. Active Reports (AR) is a similar product, with the enormous advantage of NO ROYALTIES per application!!! The drawback is that there is no VC++ suport or examples, although you can use it through the ActiveX components and the COM interfaces. Also it works wonderfull with VB, VB.Net, C# and everything that uses Windows Forms.
My request/Idea:
For those who want to implement it in pure VC++ non-managed enviroment, the task is difficult. I have already working code for the viewer, with Bound and Unbound data. Currently im stuck with the designer(yes, u can include a report designer with NO ROYALTIES).
I dont write myself an article with what i have so far, cause my COM knowledge isnt the best and i dont think i can explain it well. So... i would ask you fellow mates if you could help me writting an article AND, most important, help me and everybody to get a good, well documented, implementation of this great product in VC++.

Anyone brave enough to give an overview of the relative merits of developing in Win32 , COM or .NET, with an to the future ? Most of what I have read has been aimed at developers and in house teams with an eye to suggesting the future is .NET ?
Here is some of my thoughts:
Ive seen so many software technologies come and go i dont bother learning too many any more.
Now after experimenting with MFC and finding out Uncle Bills concept of "abstraction" included information hiding, which reduced my comprehension of the windows os i took up WIN32 using C and bought most of the books. The result a budding coder.
Now i perused all the stuff about .NET and realize its possibly a move by MS away from traditional os toward virtual machines etc.
So can anyone advise if my current win32 applications will be worth maintaining or even developing new ones if, as it appears, MS will at some point in the near future mandate what type of binaries can run on their virtual machines, and this includes their previous idea of MS deciding which applications are fit to run using their code signing methods.
I purchased Petzolds C# and the code to do similar in win32 is voluminous, do I have to learn another language? Although i am proficient in cpp, its the framework calls and amount of code required to do simple things.
So has anyone any thoughts on this is the future .NET, since MS can remove WIN32, since its only a layer over the system, and we have COM appearing to duplicate many WIN32 functions?
The removal of Internet Explorer from the Freeware Shelf and making the commctrl non redistributable, seems to hasten the process of death by a thousand cuts.
So how should I view the future WIN32 , COM or .NET whats the best strateg

Huh? There are benefits of using COM?
Sorry, had to rant becuase of some of my personal bad experiences with COM.

COM is a significant improvement over raw DLLs in some ways, such as standardising some interface negotiation, and lifetime management. I've had bad experience with COM too, usually debugging code written by someone who didn't know what Release was for, and had never heard of smart pointers.
I'd guess that isn't you, sounds like you're a fair way along the learning curve if you're complaining about it

I have downloaded several article Projects and have open them in VS, When doing this I have found some give me a version error. It says the project was created in a newer version than I have. Is there a work around for this or do I have to upgrade to VS 2003?
If I am having this issue I assume others are also, This would be a good idea for an article.
