QuestionArticle Request: Merits of Using WIN32 COM or .NET ? Pin

Anyone brave enough to give an overview of the relative merits of developing in Win32 , COM or .NET, with an to the future ? Most of what I have read has been aimed at developers and in house teams with an eye to suggesting the future is .NET ?

Here is some of my thoughts:
Ive seen so many software technologies come and go i dont bother learning too many any more.
Now after experimenting with MFC and finding out Uncle Bills concept of "abstraction" included information hiding, which reduced my comprehension of the windows os i took up WIN32 using C and bought most of the books. The result a budding coder.

Now i perused all the stuff about .NET and realize its possibly a move by MS away from traditional os toward virtual machines etc.

So can anyone advise if my current win32 applications will be worth maintaining or even developing new ones if, as it appears, MS will at some point in the near future mandate what type of binaries can run on their virtual machines, and this includes their previous idea of MS deciding which applications are fit to run using their code signing methods.

I purchased Petzolds C# and the code to do similar in win32 is voluminous, do I have to learn another language? Although i am proficient in cpp, its the framework calls and amount of code required to do simple things.

So has anyone any thoughts on this is the future .NET, since MS can remove WIN32, since its only a layer over the system, and we have COM appearing to duplicate many WIN32 functions?

The removal of Internet Explorer from the Freeware Shelf and making the commctrl non redistributable, seems to hasten the process of death by a thousand cuts.

So how should I view the future WIN32 , COM or .NET whats the best strateg
