I will tell you how I have done this in the past.
But a button on your page in design view.
Double click the Button1to get an new method in the code behind. In that method put the code you want to run to update the parent grid...
In the page_load add
Button1.Style.Add("display", "none");
Create a javascript method on the markup
function UpdateGrid() {
var Button1 = document.getElementById("<%=Button1.ClientID %>");
Button1.click();
}
Call UpdateGrid(); in javascript when your window closes or when you need to.
I didn't get any requirements for the signature

Does anyone know how or an article that can tell me how to handle downloading for clients of a website of an odd file.
Say heres the scenario: I want them to pull off a fresh copy of the database as a backup file when they visit a page on my website.
Now i now how to create the bak file , but now I need to know what is the best course of action when downloading it. I can create the file on server and Response.Redirect to the file to case the file to get loaded.
What i would like to know now is there a way this file can be streamed directly to the clients browser without being physically on the server drive.
Or is there a way of creating the file and then deleting once it finished downloading ?
Thanx

Thank you

Odd file meaning a file that is dynamically generated when requested and is not a functional part (what actually make the website work) of the website. a .bak file which is a sql backup format would be seen as a odd field because it does not get displayed it merely dynamic output provided

Can you please read the rest of the text (and title) it clearly states I know how to create the backup as a file what I would like to know is options to provide this backup file on the fly for my clients.

What was said that that is the current option I am using but would like to know if there are alternatives (please read the whole article)

There is no problem I am looking for an alternative, maybe giving the file to the client on the response stream instead of physically having the file on the server. I know of an example where they actually use a technique to stream a file to limit the amount of kbps each download can use.
And please refrain from marking your post as an answer when u are just asking questions

can we add connection string in global.asax???
if yes tell me the sample code....
if no tell me the reason...
|
|
|
|
|
Yes! you can add connection string at Global.asax.
code of global.asax with Connection String:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
]]>
]]>
void Application_Start()
{
//Connection string for SQL Server with trusted connection
Application.Add ("DB_CONNECTION_STRING","DRIVER={SQL Server};SERVER=ServerName;DATABASE=DataBaseName;Trusted_connection=yes;");
}
void Session_Start()
{
//open connection to database
OdbcConnection cnConnection = new OdbcConnection (Application.Get("DB_CONNECTION_STRING").ToString());
cnConnection.Open();
Session.Add ("DB_CONNECTION", cnConnection );
}
void Session_End()
{
//a graceful disconnect
OdbcConnection cnConnection = (OdbcConnection) Session["DB_CONNECTION"];
cnConnection.Close ();
}

Hi
i want to upload multiple files with single file upload control?
user can select multiple files when he click on browse and upload with single click?

Well, how do you propose to do that ? Your only bet is to tell your user to take all those files, and put them in a single zip. You can't magically change html, or ASP.NET, or the web, to fit what you wish it could do.

No - it's a single user control that generates multiple upload controls, which is the only way you can do it, unless you do something with an activeX. As the article itself says, an upload control can only manage a single file.

I Agree Christian Graus that an upload control can only manage a single file, but to come out of stuck-in situation its not a bad idea to create a custom control and use it as a multiple file upload control.

i have a class called common,which holds the reference to a web service,every time when i want to use the web service i called a method connect() which returns webservice.service and through that i call the relevant method in the web service.
what i want to know is whether this way, means creating a new instance for the web service every time is effective,
because as we work with db after finishing the work we disconnect the connection to db.
here we don't do it.if this way is not effecient what would be the most effective way?

Are you creating instance at the click of calling web-methods or its on class initialization?
1) If you are using it on click of button then you should kept it under the class constructor. This will reduce the no. of request to get the web-service methods at every click.
2) Other way is: if your web method is not parameterized and you require each time the same output then you can go for the shared variable, just store the output in your shared variable and use it instead of calling web-service again and again.

the situation is that i call different web methods on different button clicks, with passing parameters.
public static rservice.Service connect_webserver()
{
rservice.Service srv = new rservice.Service();
srv.CookieContainer = new CookieContainer();
return srv;
}
this is the code that i use to create a new instance of the web reference.
for each button click i call this method to refer the web service.
i think this is like creating connections to db for each db call.if i'm correct
then i think this is not good, if so using a shared connection might be efficient.
then can you tell me how to find some articles about this.

What is your question ? I *think* it's 'I took a paid job and have no idea how to do it', but the specifics are lost on me. You have a list of strings, and you have a textbox. Why don't you have a drop down list ? What data field are you changing ? What are you changing it to ? You can't seriously be asking us how to create a drop down list ? Buy an ASP.NET book, and read it. In the meantime, tell your client you lied to them.

touchy touchy. someone thinks they are the master at asp.net coding. i was only asking a general question thought forums were provided to help, and i guess someone has too much time on their hands, coming up with sarky comments to put people down. im actually creating a university project using asp.net coding, i am not getting paid and i have no client to tell them i lied to them. but hey you cant be right all the time better luck next time chum(p)

When i am calling Excel() it is showing the error cs1503,it is saying that Excel is not taking the arguments,which argument i have to give in this code
private void lnkExport_Click(object sender, System.EventArgs e)
{
Excel();
}
private void Excel(DataGrid DGInbox,HttpResponse response)
{
response.Clear();
response.Charset = "";
response.ContentType = "application/vnd.ms-excel";
StringWriter stringWrite = new StringWriter();
HtmlTextWriter htmlWrite = new HtmlTextWriter(stringWrite);
DGInbox.GridLines = GridLines.None;
DGInbox.RenderControl(htmlWrite);
for(int i=0;i<DGInbox.Items.Count;i++)
{
response.Write(DGInbox.Items[i].Cells[0].Text+"\n"+DGInbox.Items[i].Cells[1].Text);
}
response.End();
}

you should post the actual errror message. However, in this case, it's not hard to see the issue. Buy a basic C# book, and read it. Don't play with things like excel when you have no idea of the basics of C#, it won't help you.

Your error is correct. There is no overload of the Excel method that takes no parameters.

the function written by by needs two parameter, you must pass it in your function call like
Excel(datagrid object,response object)
The miracle is this--the more we share, the more we have.
