I only listen to rap; I just listen to different types and have different playlists set up depending on what mood I'm in
If it's broken, I probably did it

Hmmm, I wonder if there's any correlation between those two sentences.

I am slowly giving up rap, with the exception of my favorite old school artists. Recently i started dabling in jazz, i love it.
I am sitting in my flame proof buncker, so don't even bother.

Rap reminds me a bit of Led Zep. Sounds great when you are young, but as you get older you realize there really isn't much there.

I'm going to patent thought. I have yet to see any prior art.

really depends on who you are listening to. Stay away from the cRap you hear on the radio and listen to artist that don't make it to the radio too often and you got it made. My personal favorite hiphop albums to listen to while coding are:
Talib Kweli - Reflection eternal
Roots - things fall apart
Roots - tipping point
Common - Electric Circus
Common - Like water for chocolate
Blackstar - Blackstar
Mos Def - Black on Both sides
I also like to listen to Jazz/techno ambiant (sometimes its hard to tell whether its jazz or techno -ish)

while I value everyone's opinions, I value some less than others. I thought this was a poll. Had I known it was a debate I wouldn't have bothered to put my 3 cents in. (Yeah, THREE cents)

I cannot programming without listening Tristania, Diary of Dreams, Lacrimosa, Eternal Tears of Sorrow.
Just the Best.

Yeah! Lacrimosa is a really great band. And I'm actually listening to the "Echos" album. Very inspiring...

For some of the same reasons mentioned in other posts - no words.
Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Yanni, Movie Music (Soundtracks), Classical Music, etc.

Take everything you've got, load it into Winamp and enable shuffle.

Not much into rock but RAMMSTEIN yes. The thing is it is in german so the words dont affect thinking. This is especialy important when doing loops.

Yes! This is the point.
Music is ok if I can't understand any word.
Electronic music, even classical music fit this statement.

I have this strange addiction to Trance and Goa (club music for people on drugs) but I am not a club go-er. Anyway I find that the music helps me get "in the zone" and I do not get distracted but too much singing.
A few months back I found this posting on /. about Station Ripper http://www.ratajik.com/StationRipper/[^]. It allows you to stream audio to your pc but also saves the stream to your hd for later listening pleasure.
