while I value everyone's opinions, I value some less than others. I thought this was a poll. Had I known it was a debate I wouldn't have bothered to put my 3 cents in. (Yeah, THREE cents)

I cannot programming without listening Tristania, Diary of Dreams, Lacrimosa, Eternal Tears of Sorrow.
Just the Best.

Yeah! Lacrimosa is a really great band. And I'm actually listening to the "Echos" album. Very inspiring...

For some of the same reasons mentioned in other posts - no words.
Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Yanni, Movie Music (Soundtracks), Classical Music, etc.

Take everything you've got, load it into Winamp and enable shuffle.
Very good but occasionally wierd

Not much into rock but RAMMSTEIN yes. The thing is it is in german so the words dont affect thinking. This is especialy important when doing loops.
The mother..... loops!!!

Yes! This is the point.
Music is ok if I can't understand any word.
Electronic music, even classical music fit this statement.
Build the path. The past is just a reference.

I have this strange addiction to Trance and Goa (club music for people on drugs) but I am not a club go-er. Anyway I find that the music helps me get "in the zone" and I do not get distracted but too much singing.
A few months back I found this posting on /. about Station Ripper http://www.ratajik.com/StationRipper/[^]. It allows you to stream audio to your pc but also saves the stream to your hd for later listening pleasure.

On my PC I have 3 GB of music. And I listen to it most of the day, every day. Loud enough not to ear my dear coworkers
Heavy Metal and Rock. From Slipknot and Sepultura to PJ Havey and Led Zeppelin.
Right now I'm listening to Godsmack.
Good coding to you all.

I agree. At work it is mostly white noise from my desktop pc and the ac ducts (which is actually considerably louder than the pc). At home mostly silence, but sometimes lite jazz off the satellite dish. I find this very relaxing for those 3 AM programming tasks...

As loud as I can stand it. And with my noise-cancelling ones, that's pretty high.
Depending on my mood at the time, I listen to different styles.
Rock (Third Eye Blind, Semisonic, Jimmy Eat World, Nickelback)
Christian (Newsboys, Switchfoot, Michael W. Smith, Jars of Clay)
Hard Rock (Linkin Park, Evanescance, Green Day, Hoobastank)
Classical (Tchaikovsky, Beethoven)
Rap (Tobymac, Eminem, Jay-Z, D-tent Boys)
Techno/Dance (Moby, Da Rude, TrANcE, and the Command & Conquer game soundtracks)
The only music I'm not real thrilled about is Smooth Jazz.

Not quite sure, but it works. I find that what helps me concentrate best is Linkin Park. I still can't figure that one out.
