My current contract doesn't have developer laptops; everybody gets the same model. I spend a lot of time staring at loading screens and waiting for builds to finish. Debugging is painfully slow. Thankfully I love what I do, but I can't help but think a better machine is worth more than the opportunity cost of twiddling my thumbs.

I didn't include this on my list because I don't need a fast and powerful machine, just an adequate one. But it sounds like you don't even have that, so I can see why your perspective would be different.

Very true. However, I love the job, so there's that. I'm also old enough to know there are bigger issues in the world and that I don't need to sweat this.

I get more annoyed by having a good machine but not being able to install / do whatever I need to get the job done due to IT politics... that's way more frustrating than having a slow machine

Yeah, I feel you on that one. Oof!

Now everybody hates you!

Maybe someone will want to work on my project so they can get access to it.

No, just the people close enough to hear the hair driers running 24/7.
(It's a 1U server, 40mm fans that can move enough air to keep something cool are obnoxiously loud.)
Did you ever see history portrayed as an old man with a wise brow and pulseless heart, weighing all things in the balance of reason?
Is not rather the genius of history like an eternal, imploring maiden, full of fire, with a burning heart and flaming soul, humanly warm and humanly beautiful?

Yes, it is so loud that I had to put it in another room (my guest bedroom) so I could work while it's running.
Its name is "TopGun" for that same reason.

For sure. I never understood people who actually preferred to listen to music while working. They must need background noise, because I put music on to listen to it, which is incompatible with working.

It depends on the music, for me instrumental music in low volume helps me focus better most because it isolates me from other background noises that would annoy me.
When I want to really listen to music, the volume is way different.

I get it. A budget-conscious version of noise-cancelling headphones!

I prefer to have popular music from my playlist on most of the time.
If I'm working on something difficult, I switch to just "New Age" woo-woo music with no words.
If it's REALLY difficult, sometimes I need absolute silence.

I am most productive when I am motivated.

The absolute best motivation is having a wife & family to support. Anything else, including personal satisfaction, is secondary.

Productivity comes from motivation. Passion motivates me. If I don't feel very passionate about a certain project, task, I am not as productive as I can be.
My wife can always leave with the kids if she wants. That is not motivation anymore for me. She makes way more money than I do, anyhow. Just saying.

1. I'd miss both my wife and my children if they left.
2. As long as they haven't left, my statement stands.

Before I was able to retire, having a wife to support was definitely enough to make me work even at jobs I hated.
Now that I don't have to work, I'm way more productive because I work only on my own projects that I'm highly motivated to work on even if they never amount to anything financially.

I'm not quite there yet. I have one daughter doing her National Service, and another still in high school.
