No problem girlfriend...

I absolutely love writing code and building solid, long-lived libraries and apps. There is nothing else in life I'd rather do but develop software.

I'd rather be with a beautiful woman in a stable, loving relationship. Developing software isn't that great in comparison.

It gets boring real quick if that is the sum total of your life!
Don't be bloody silly you need to earn a living, so do you take pride in what you do for that part of your existence!
Never underestimate the power of human stupidity

I do, and I do. However, Ravi said, "There is nothing else in life I'd rather do but develop software." and that is what I was responding to. I enjoy writing code, and I am happy to make my living writing code, but I can think of lots of things I'd rather do.

And yet you're wasting time answering polls.

Assuming you care to care what I think (a leap of faith, indeed!), look at my "bio" (second paragraph) for a true expression of pride.

If you are seek perfection in yourself, then you will find failure." - Balboos HaGadol Mar 2010 |

I have a job where I pretty much get to set my own pace and work on stuff that I enjoy. Stuff l ike programming and designing hardware, for me it’s like playing.
The added bonus is that my company allows me 20% of my time to develop personal projects (Projects that benefit the company course...)
It’s not always fun and games, but that’s just a pat of life.
I am very fortunate, and I am proud to say I like my job and many others think so as well.
It was broke, so I fixed it.

I'm just glad to have a job.

There is an idiom that "Pride goes before a fall", or something like that. I'm not sure I can say I am proud or not proud to be a programming-writer. I am proud of most of my work, does that count?

Now that I'm a programmer and manager, I create things that are useful, and I can make sure others (the people who report to me) are treated with the respect, understanding and appreciation that they deserve. All in all, life is good and I'm proud of who I am and what I do.

Good luck
Just because the code works, it doesn't mean that it is good code.

I think we can be happy with what we are doing, without being proud of our vocation... software development is not exactly saving the planet or feeding the hungry.

Bad news, kid. I tried saving the world. Too many to save, not enough time, money or people interested in trying. Don't worry about saving the world. Pick one single creature and try to save it. If you do that, pick another and try to save it. One small piece at a time - that's how you save the world.
And look at it this way. Programming might not be the most directly world-saving profession, but on the other hand it's not refining weapons-grade Plutonium There are always shades of gray.

Out of 100 options, I'd say 98, actually.
Assuming, of course, that pure white and pure black actually exist.
