I get headaches if I stare at a program with a white background for more than a couple hours, so I have to use a dark background to get anything significant done.

I figured if I have to glue to the screen 8-10 hours a day and do the eyes a bit favor, black background is easier, beside its old DOS habit . White background to me is like staring at a flourescent light all day long.

Moreover, Dark pixels consume less energy than light pixels. Hence going greener in a way, you see.

A black background has helped to keep my eyes sharp during my 30 years of coding. Staring at a bright white light for 8+ hours a day is just asking for trouble.

For me after 1 week trying a dark background light text my eyes were painful and my vision blurred even when not looking at a screen. Since reverting to white background and black text my eyes are back to 20/20 and no pain. (I have been staring at a monitor for over 10 years with this and my eyesight is perfect). So I seriously think light text on dark background is harmful.. I wonder do you wair glasses already? (all the people who seem to prefer light on dark seem to)

My eyes are pretty close to perfect so far. No glasses yet.
My black background preference might have to do with the good old DOS prompt. Back when I really fell in love with computers, 1980, Windows wasn't born yet.
Black background, fixed width raster fonts, and I'm a happy coder

Of course you can change it, but I've set the color selection panel to "black and white". Because.

So what you see is all shades of gray, that is... if you know what color gray is?
It was broke, so I fixed it.

Sure I do. It's the color of my matter.

Recently the project I’m working on has had me working under four different programming environments simultaneously. Xcode for iOS, VS2010, VB.6 (I know, don’t need to hear about it…) and some proprietary combination of xml, a custom scripting scheme using odd kind of basic in Notepad++ for 8051 microprocessor based hardware.
Too much of a headache already switching programming modes in my head, then to add trying to get them all to appear useful or to look “cool”.
I just leave it at the default.
It was broke, so I fixed it.
