It depends on the usage.
As a developer I worked about 3 years only on a laptop + an extra monitor.
Of course the Laptop was top notch but this kind of performance comes with extra weight.
This kind of laptop that weights 2.6Kg I call it a transportable
These kind of "transportable" machines are now very well compared to an above average desktop.
Just plug it to a 24inch monitor, and there you have it.

Much to my own surprise, my iPod touch has already become my mobile computer of choice. It wasn't why I bought it, I just wanted to listen to music and maybe play the occasional mobile game. But it is SO convenient, and unlike the iPad it fits in my pocket so it is always with me. I can't use a device I never bother to take anywhere.
