As a primary portable machine, the vertical resolution to me is important, nothing worse that trying to work in a 800 high screen, so a high resolution laptop will be my main primary machine.
However, might consider a tablet next (waiting to see what Google or HTC come up with), just for casual browsing etc. while lying in bed etc.
I know one thing for sure.......it wont be a iPad!

I'm curious what all will be out in the next year or two on the tablet front myself. I bought an old fujitsu tablet about a year ago (p3-800, ~2lbs); but it was too heavy to hold for an extended period of time and ended up being little used as a result.

It depends on the usage.
As a developer I worked about 3 years only on a laptop + an extra monitor.
Of course the Laptop was top notch but this kind of performance comes with extra weight.
This kind of laptop that weights 2.6Kg I call it a transportable
These kind of "transportable" machines are now very well compared to an above average desktop.
Just plug it to a 24inch monitor, and there you have it.

Much to my own surprise, my iPod touch has already become my mobile computer of choice. It wasn't why I bought it, I just wanted to listen to music and maybe play the occasional mobile game. But it is SO convenient, and unlike the iPad it fits in my pocket so it is always with me. I can't use a device I never bother to take anywhere.
He said, "Boy I'm just old and lonely,
But thank you for your concern,
Here's wishing you a Happy New Year."
I wished him one back in return.

I initially thought the question referred to the upcoming release of Portal 2.0.
