Windows Phone 7 communication with database server/application

Hello,

I wish to connect my windows phone 7.1 app running on an emulator to a database server to do the following:

1. Send data to database.
2. Receive data from database.

Please let me know how can I do so;
Also tell me if I can operate a database application on my system simultaneously interacting with my wp7 app as mentioned above.
