In my control panel, I see a long list of items as below:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.17
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.4974
Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable - x86 9.0.30729.6161
Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x64 Redistributable - 10.0.40219
Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x64 Runtime - 10.0.40219
Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x86 Redistributable - 10.0.40219
Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x86 Runtime - 10.0.40219

Some of the items as the text description seems to be obsolete and some does not seem matching for the processor architecture of my system.

Are these safe to be uninstalled? Or would it break anything?

It should be safe to unistall the 64-bit packages from a 32-bit system as these are useless and probably installed in error. However you can't safely remove the 32-bit packages from a 64-bit system. They are very likely still to be in use with software distributed as 32-bit binaries.

I would probably leave them all in place given the minimal relative cost of having them and the potential chaos that could arrise from removal. They are probably costing you 2-10MB of disk space each and a couple of registry entries.

My 5 too !!!
These redist packages allow programs to run that were built with that environment on the original developer's build system. If you remove the VS2008 redist packages for example, no products build with VS2008 will be able to run (well, almost none). You can't for example run a VS2008 app using the VS2010 libraries.
