What does it mean if lot SPID are in Sleeping status?

Hi All

We have found Lot of SPID (More than 40)are in sleeping status and using CPU usage. Could any one brief me what does it mean?
What whould be the cause if the status "Sleeping" is being maintained?
Will it make Insert/Update/Delete commands slow?
