How to generate a report using report viewer when the number of columns is unknown or varies. For example, if the columns to be displayed is selected by using a CheckBoxList which will be different every time.

So is there any way to bind the report viewer directly from the database?

Yes, surely there is.

Try the Matrix control of reportviewer. It would extend/add columns based on the query result (which would depend on selected checkboxes in your case.)
