What features should I look for in a IT software solution

We currently have requirements to handle Help Desk Requests, Tasks, Project Management, Billing, Payables, Timesheets, and perhaps things like Batch Jobs and Surveys. I am finding it hard to find software programs that encompass all of these features (particularly at a reasonable cost for smaller businesses like ours). It is also likely that my lack of perfection has caused me to miss something that will be needed.

What options are there that you have seen that cover the above list and hopefully other features that you know are needed in an IT shop / Consulting business?

What features am I missing that you have needed, and I have not included?

I want to make sure I cover all the bases as this is likely to be a fair amount of money and not something the company will want to pay for twice.

I am looking for a web site (with Batch Agents) that will suit the above list and be expandable to other features and add-ons we may need.

What I have tried:

In general the standard "ERP" fits all solution didn't seem to hold up when it comes to finding a software program to handle the needs of the IT (particularly small consulting/product development organization) as it is too expensive and too limited regarding the features needed.

Solution 1

Basecamp.com[^] is a good place to start out.

It is focused on Project Management but the team has other tools which integrate easily too.

It's going to solve your PM, Tasks etc.
But it doesn't have things like payables, etc.
Here are some things it covers:

Messages
Realtime chat
To-do lists
Schedules
File storage
Documents
Automatic check-ins

I will add some of those features to my check list as they are ones I had not thought of that would be helpful.
The lack of accounting functions is a show stopper though.
