Hi Jack,
this is interesting problem. Two versions of same app is usually handled by #ifdef and things like that. Anyway, it doesn't help with open source. It could be good idea to make a tool which will remove "pro" code. I wish I had time... I think it can be useful tool. Is anything like that already done? Try google...

I think it may be already set up to be done with .Net but I can't figure it out. I usually just add a project and go at it. This is the first time I needed something more involved. I set up a test project and added two different projects to it (the solution they call it). That would at least make copying from one file to another easier. But when I tried it on my main project, it won't let me do it since they have the same internal names. Supposedly, you can just click on Rename to have .Net rename the project but that didn't work. Although it wouldn't surprise me to find I am doing it wrong. If anyone knows how to rename a project with .Net I would appreciate the help.

I think something can be accomplished with a good source control system. They have a feature called Branching, so that you can keep the separate source for two versions of your project.
Say you have version 1.0 final, and then you start working on 2.0. If you find a big bug in 1.0, you fix it and release 1.0a. So you create a branch for updating 1.x code, while working on 2.0 (both based on 1.0) and you can merge branches, so 1.x modifications are merged into 2.0 code.
Well, it's something like that.

You may have bigger problems depending on the licence you use.
For example if you licence the free version using the GNU licence [^]then you also have to distribute your PRO version under the GNU licence and provide the full source code as it is using code from your free version.
If you use the BSD licence [^]you can just make sure you include the same copyright info in both versions.

Hmm, Thanks for mentioning this - I wasn't aware of it. I'm not sure if the BSD license is acceptable by the place I am submitting it to. In the event it is not, is it OK to have the free version, say "MyProgram," and then a non-free version but call it "My Other Program." And then mention in the description for My Other Program that it does everything My Program does and more. How do others get around this? I see free and non-free versions all of the time on various web sites.

It was something I came across with the GNU license, which many people use for open source development. Where I work we had our own license drawn up by experts which covers our particular oddities. Writing your own license does solve the problem as you can say whatever you want. I have come across a number of forum posts recently that advocate the BSD license over the GNU license. For my own free stuff I just put in a "use this at your own risk" disclaimer. That way I can use it at my own risk in a non-free version and license that completely differently. The issue is more to do with making your source code available, or not, than anything else.

 Hi there,
I have a question about deploying a vb .net application what is build up with an executable and some DLL files with shared functionality.
What I have:
A Library of DLL files with some general functionality.
An application what is using some DLL files from this library.
What I want:
Installing the application executable in de folder <program files="">\<app folder="">
Installing the DLL files and other shared files in <program files="">\common files\<base app="" folder="" />
When I place the DLL files in the same directory as the executable then the application is running fine.
As soon I place the DLL files in the common files directory he can't find the files any more.
So far I understand it.
OK first I place a registery key like this
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths\<file.exe>
Where I place a string value "Path" with a value <program files="">\common files\<base app="" folder="" />
This is not working
In the System Environment variables I add in the %Path%
the directory <program files="">\common files\<base app="" folder="" />
This is also not working
In the Debug window I only see that the application searches only in the current directory.

when I placed this Thread I had no any assembly configuration.
After some searching in my .net books I found a solution to configer the assembly location.
I need to do 3 things.
1- Generate a Public token certificate with te command sn -k <key Name.snk>
2- Recompile all your public / Shared files with this assembly code
<Assembly: AssemblyKeyFile("E:\Key.snk")>
3- Configer your application with the .NET Configuration tool.
Add the application and then Add the assemblies.
The .NET configuration tool generates a <app.exe>.config file like

So far this Was working  , I have also tested this on a clean computer with XP Prof on it (My dev pc is also XP prof both with .Net 1.1)
Second step was to install this on the Terminal server (2003 server) we use. Installation OK but when I start the app.
I get a error message that the app can not find the assembly "Cannot find the assembly SAI.Data, Version=1.0.1766.34219, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null."
OK, The <app.exe>.config file is there. the assemblies have already a "forced" version like
<Assembly: AssemblyVersion("1.2.0")>
Extra I added the binding redirections (see above). Checked all paths ok.
Because normally I install apps on this server under G: I reinstalled under C:\Program Files so also this paths reflects exactly the same path as the test pc. (Is not solving the problem)
Strange is that it can find the assembly for my error messages so it looks like something is wrong with only this assembly.
Maybe something in the register ?
I searched already but I can't find it !
Can I find it back as the assembly guid ?

Yes. You can.
Suppose if you want to access components in Unmanaged environment which is developed in .NET.Then you need to keep a liitle things in mind.
1. Entry in AssemblyInfo.cs
2. Default Constructor
3. No more static methods.

Well i am not a programmer which is why i would like to take your valuable suggestions. To be precise i am looking to develop an inhouse application which would do the following:
There are some documents which are required by different personnel of different departments e.g. HR, Management, Engineering, Sales etc.
I need to develop an application which would be a kind of UI and allow the people to pull out the documents according to their authentication e.g the people from Management Level may be able to pull the documents from the Management folder and the people from Sales may be able to pull the docuements from the Sales folder.
But there may be some users which should have access to all the documents like the VP, Senior Manager level or other senior levels. I can use some Database also to keep track of the users. I want that to be scalable also but what should be the base plan. What use cases can i take?
I can use IIS/Apache as server.
All the help in this regard will be higly appreciated. Any practical examples like this will help me a lot so that i can get a headstart.

Any particular reason this couldn't just be handled using shared folders on a network server (each folder with different user permissions, depending on who's allowed to access the specific files within)

Yes defenitely these can be handled via the way you are suggesting, but how?. Since i am not a Windows guy may be some practilca help or pointers will be benficial for me.
I mean as i expressed all the company needs is that the users should be able to pull up some docments according to their departments and their roles from a central server which is having Win 2K Server. I need to proveid them with some sort of interface so that it may become very easy for the non technical personal also.

Hi
I developed a C# interface, that will be called by the VC++ code and it is working fine.
For deployment I am registering the C# dll in the client machne using the regasm.exe tool.
Now I am planing to develop my own MSI application using Installshield,
any idea how to do this?,
One more point I understand is it is not required to call regsvr32.exe to rigister a COM component if I am doing the deployment through MSI application.

I just did the same thing (but with a VB.Net assembly).
You have to create an installer class in the assembly and make the installer call it. This is pretty easily done if you create a .net setup project, not sure how you do it in Installshield (last I used it was way back in version 5.5 )
I actually got the information from the web (but can't remember the location now). In any case, the main thing is to override two functions in the installer class. Here is the VB.NET code:

I don't remember what the registry key bits were for but I remember that for most assemblies you could just comment them out (so I did).

What you said is right, you no need manually do regsvr32.exe to register COM, If you are using install shield, when you are creating MSI file, you have to mention what are all dll/COM components you need (dependecey on) then make MSI file.
Once MSI file is create that will take care of registering the COM components.
