Blast, I cann't find it! Do a search on the Norton series of books. Years ago I found a book that showed how to do this precisly (so we all could understand it). I use it to write my own C code (much more flexable) for creating caculators and graphing programs.
There is an article at CP that will help you, just do a search.
As for 100s of digits, well that is a whole nother subject!

Does anyone know of a good place that has a tutorial or complete "working" programs that use C++ Serial I/O Comm routines? I have found some stuff, but all have many errors which doesn't help me since I dont know much of it to begin with. I am using MSoft's Visual Studio.NET just to let you know in case some code isnt directly compatible with it.

P.S. I found a C++ Serial Comm Library from "WSC" but all it had was a .lib file (obviously a library) and a header file. Now I never worked with libraries before in c++ so I didnt know how to use it. What I did was include both in my original source file and it came with so many errors I didnt even try to fix them because as I said I dont know enough about how to use serial comm in c++.
P.P.S. I do know How serial comm works in general just not how to incorporate it into a c++ program.

In the old days that was normal, but DOS is almost dead and very few peaple try to access the hardware directly any more.
The MSDN has "Serial Communications Functions" listed, I do not know if that helps!
There is an article at CP some where, I do not beleave it is the one you found (but is sounds like it).
Google "CreateFile Serial Comm", it gave some good hits.
Sorry I was of no more help, this use to be easy until modern Windows came along (security and all that). Now it appears so complicated that I have to look it up (each time) before tying it.

For my current application (MFC C++ dialog)I was generating my own database, just a large array of type Struct (name, address, cost, code etc - CStringArray, CStrings, ints and doubles) and initialing it at startup via a Tab delimited file. The program will then add more records as required.
The reason for moving to mySQL is one of speed and its free.
I was just using the CStringArray class to store the names of items and do all the searching; e.g. string searches and the array was getting quite large and I was getting worried about speed as the database grows.
I have just unstalled mySQL 4.1 onto my PC (runs a dos window - that's as far as I have got), and I have just started reading the syntax & commands for SQL. Does anyone know of any good introductions/tutorials, i.e. sample projects using mySQL with an MFC C++ Visual Studio .Net 2002 program. Also I would like to populate the mySQL database with this Tab delimited file is that possible?
So any information/tutorials most welcome.
A sample project using mySQL would be great, as from web searches they seem to be problems with different versions of Visual Studio.

I am not sure that I should write this here, but...
is it possible to listen to port 135 without getting a error 10048 or aother port that windows use.
I have tried to use sockets, didn't work.

No, it isn't. Of course you could use a sniffer if you want to know what's going on on the network however only one socket can listen on a given port at a given time. That's why you're not supposed to listen on well known ports (see Port Numbers (IANA)[^] or Port Assignments for Commonly-Used Services[^] for Windows specific services) unless you implement that service.

That I don't know. However if I were you I would try to find out how an existing sniffer works. Maybe you should check out WinPcap[^], the packet capture library used by the Windows version of Ethereal[^].

First of all, I assume that you know what you are doing. If you just randomlly picked port 135, then you need to learn more about networking before you continue. Since I'm assuming you know what you are doing, warnings about how doing this can have really really bad effects on your system, even making it unuseable, are redundant.
Port 135 is the dcom-scm. So you need to disable it. See:

Well, if you start that project to learn more about networking I'd say it's a good idea. But if you just want to do it because you need a tool like that I'd say it isn't worth the trouble. A good firewall will let you know when an unauthorized process tries to listen/connect. And for detailed analysis of what's going on you can use a tool like Ethereal.

Hi all.
I got a simple problem using CString, but I can't find a good solution for it.
I have a Database with a field (10 Bytes long) as a CString (using MFC ODBC).
and I need to get and set the Values of each byte.
Example:
CString text = "ABCDEFGH90"; I can get the values by using text.GetAt(0);
But if I code a staement like this I just get a lot errors..
if (text.GetAt(0) == "A") <- compiler error
or if I like to set a value
text.SetAt(0, "T") <- compiler error
What is the best way to do it without having trouble to convert the hole stuff to const char and back ??

"A" and "T" are strings not characters.
'A' and 'T' represent character values.
if(text.GetAt(0) == 'A)) <- no error
text.SetAt(0,'T') <- no error.

This program reads .bmp files and like types them in a game screen. I would like it so to be activated by dragging a crosshair over the game screen so the program knows where the screen is
The game I am talking about is runescape.
This program would read the .bmp and type the word in and then press the key enter

Hi,
Can anyone please help me with this problem?
I have a dialog with a CRichEditCtrl and a button.
The user highlights a piece of text and clicks the button.
When the button is clicked, a modal Dialog is created.
This modal dialog has a CEdit and a button. The CEdit contains a variable of type CString.
The user enters text in this CEdit.
When the OK button is clicked, the text in the CEdit should replace the highlighted text in the CRichEditCtrl in the initial dialog.
When the program is executed it gives a "Debug Assertion Failed" error.
The assertion is as follows (from AFXCMN.H):

Do not try to replace the text from within the dialog. Replace the text after the dialog closes, it is easier.
MyProjectDlg dlg; // dialog type now exist
// but the window does not exist yet
// therefor, you can not send it any messages.
According to your comments: The MyProjectDlg should already exist and it should be lunching the MyModalDialog, but here you are asking MyModalDialog to create a new MyProjectDlg and replace the selected text in that (which also does not exist).
