This still isn't correct because you're only accounting for cases in which the user leaves the field blank. An exception will still be thrown if the user enters something like "I can't remember" (don't laugh - if you don't think a user would enter something like that, you're not treating input as the evil thing it actually is) or "(760)347-1234". The second one is a valid phone number (at least where I am), but it's certainly not a decimal.
You could certainly make the value 0 if the TextBox does not contain a valid number, but as you mentioned, having a bunch of zeroes in your database masquerading as phone numbers won't do anybody any good.
So the question on the table is: What value should we enter into a nullable field in the database when we don't have a value to enter? Null seems like a good choice to me.
You should rewrite your SQL command to submit a valid phone number (how you validate it is up to you) if you have one, or null if you don't.
As an aside, I can understand the impulse to rephrase a question and ask it again in a new thread if you don't get a satisfactory answer right away, but the only thing that really accomplishes is clogging up the message board and irritating the people trying to offer assistance. Unless you're asking an unrelated question, please keep it in the thread you already started.

I am in the process of creating a custom control that has various custom properties. I have successfully created the code for simple properties (i.e. strings, booleans) using :
[Bindable(true), Category("Appearance"), DefaultValue(">>")]
public string MyStringProperty

get {...}
set {...}
}
But, I need somebody to point me in the right direction for generating property accessors for lists.
As an example I have a property called MyListProperty which has 3 possible values (val1 (default), val2, val3). On the property page in VS .NET the user would use a drop down to select one of these values (or leave as default).
Also, there are a few default properties that are not relevant to the control, is there any way I can remove or at least hide them.
And finally, I would like to disable certain property depending on the value of another property. As an example, if I set MyProperty1 to False, then MyProperty2 and MyProperty3 would be disabled.
I suppose the bottom line here, is that I need to find a tutorial on how to use properties, so if you know of one please post the URL.

Does anyone have a suggestion on how to sequentially increment through the ascii character set in c#? For example, to iterate from "a" to "z", one could set up a loop to increment integers from 97 to 122 and take convert the resulting integer to an ascii character. C++ provides the ToAscii function but I don't see a corresponding way to this in C#.

from my client side i can instantiate objects fine but i would like this server console app to display something as things happen - at the moment it just stops at "Server Activated" and then never says anything again. Is it possible to do this and if so how??

Its easy if what I've understood is what u are trying. All console outputs must be implemented in the romote object, not the server. The remote object lives in the server side, so anytime one of its methods is called from the client side, the console output will show on the host side.

I have a problem, I want to have a base class with child inherited classes.
The parent class has a method named Instanciate().

In the child class I want to call instanciate to instanciate an object of ContainedClass MyClass.
I would like the code to be generic and be in the Instanciate method of the parent class so I could have many child class with contained class of diferent types.
How can I do this ?
More importantly is it better just to put the code in the Child classes ?

Do you use Visual Studio? If yes, you can change the output file type in the project properties (Project => Properties => General).

A .EXE must have one entry point, that means the project needs at least one class with a "Main()" method.

I want to add menu items when the user clicks the icon at the task bar at the bottom of the pocket pc. But I can't find code on it. The only code I found is that it can only launch a form when the user click the icon at the task bar, but not launch a item menu just over the task icon.
So are there any reference for it ?
