How about step 3. Her computer might inffect with some kind of virus that hide the local drive from windows explorer. Is it possible that some drive in windows explorer are hidden by the virus?
In your opinion, what is the main problem that could cause windows explorer not display the CDROM drive?

Nope, the antivirus software is up to date and running. Besides, any "good" virus writer would hide the C: drive, not a pair of CD drives lower in the chain of value.
My first thought, and the commonest cause I've found, was that a cable had failed or come loose. This can happen even in a system that has not been moved or tampered with, because temperature variations cause minute changes in the components that can cause them to shift position and lose contact. Reseating connectors usually fixes such problems, or in the case of a failed cable, replacement clears up the problem.
Viewing the controllers in Device Manager reveals that there is a problem with the drive controller drivers - the yellow warning tag is displayed on all of them, which was not the case when I last saw the system. Win98 failed to detect that the hardware had changed, and kept both the old and new drivers so that each of the three entries in Device managers appears to have a duplicate installed. If I delete either of them, Win98 reinstalls it on the next boot.
The solution in this case, I'm certain, is to do a clean installation of Windows on the drive, which will remove all drivers and redetect the hardware. Unfortunately the data and programs on the system are critical, and cannot be replaced - none of the original CDs are available, and the backup device is the CD drive that has gone missing. Once the new PCs are available it will be a simple matter to move the data to a new system. Then it should be easy to buy a copy of WinXP and install it on the old machine. That, I expect, will clear up the problem and restore a very nice machine to full function. Of course, by then it will be redundant, having been replaced.

You should be able to copy the existing software and reinstall manually. It'll likely be a pain to dig through the registry, all dependant dll's, ..., but i've had fairly good success doing this in similar situations ... unless there is a license ... but even that can usually be worked around.

Hi, My organization use MyDsl internet connection. The space of the internet usage is increase every day. I just know that is space is increase by e-mail that send out, internet usage from the client and virus in some client PC. Does anyone know the method to summary the space of e-mail that my server send and receive perday? Because I want to know about an e-mail uses by my client. Please help!!!

Hi, I used windows 98se and use dialup networking to access to the internet. Last month, dialup networking is working fine (I can access to the internet). But this month I could not access to the internet when I dial a connection. During I dial the connection it display error and close the connection and IE. I go to windows explorer and found the folder of dialup networking. I select on it to view the connection but after I release the mouse button the select move to My computer icon. I don't know what is the problem come from. I want to make some change to the configuration of dialup property, but I can't view the folder of dialup networking. Can anyone give me some idea or suggestion about this problem?

I haven't bothered to get any certifications, as they are of no value in a market where employers are willing to pay only minimal wages to professionals, but I do teach A+ Tech certification at the local college. From that experience I can tell you that the single most important factor in passing the exam is practice. My students run the gamut, from those who attend every class and participate in class assignments, to those who rarely show up and settle for reading the text. The difference really shows when it comes time to take a test. Those who have laid hands on the hardware always far outperform those who think they can pass by reading the book. It is critical to have hands-on experience to reinforce what the text has to say, and to learn what the book failed to mention.
Whether you are taking a class on a piece of software or hardware makes no difference. When you are offerred a chance to exercise your knowledge, take advantage of it. Use your new skills, and learn from the mistakes you will inevitably make; don't just be content to sit in the back and take notes.

Thank you very much roger, There are 2 purpose that want to get an MCP course. The primary purpose is take advantage to gain knowledge about networking as much as possible (I have to support an idea for IT in my organization). The second purpose is pass the exam to get the certificate (to certified my knowledge). Some of my teacher said as you mention above too that practic is the best way to learn in this class. But I face some challenge (I know that I will face it), practic in school have a lot of material to learn. But I think practic at school is not enough, I like to practic at home alot after come from school. At my home only two computer were connected together. No switch/hub, no router, no backup tab... the other network component that could be use to practic at my home.  What should I do??

You're right, practice in class is not enough. Sadly, many of my students can't afford a computer at home and so have only my class to use for practice. I strongly encourage them to read the subject chapter before class so I can give only a brief lecture and maximize the time they have to get their hands dirty. It's really the best way to learn!
Since you're going to be studying networking, invest now in a cheap hub/switch for your home and practice setting up your home net using the various protocols in Windows. Check into the Resource Kit tools available on the installation CDs and online at MS TechNet, too. Learn to use the command line tools efficiently and you'll be far ahead of many networking "professionals" I've known. You can have hours of fun using ping, tracert, net, route, and other built in commands, as well.
One of the hardest concepts for my students to master is IP sub- and super-netting. Heck, some days I confuse myself on that subject. But it really is fundamental to modern networking and rather fun! If you're going to do any pre-class studying, that's where I'd focus. You won't suffer from that bunny-in-the-headlights dazed feeling that many of mine get when we hit that chapter.

Thank roger, I might find second hand computer to learn with it. In my country (Cambodia) the second hand computer is very cheap (around 120$), but I never heard about second hand hub, router, switch... I might check on the market whether it is available or not. I want to setup a small professional networking at home to learn and gain the experience as much as possible.

Hi, I have a problem with my outlook express software. I have norton client corporate edition 8.0 and norton client firewal install together and running properly, but my outlook express e-mail could not open or save the attachment file (all type of attachment files). Does anyone know how to solve this problem?

I use outlook express 6.
Try the menu Tools | Options, go to the Security Tab, and uncheck the "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potenially be a virus".

Hi, my organization use mdaemon to manage mail server. Before, we use windows nt server 4 to use mdaemon and use e-mail as normal. But today we install win2000 server and reinstall mdaemon. The problem is relate to the mail that we send from hotmail or yahoo to any address within the organization. But all of e-mail account in our organization can send to each other within the network. When we try to test at the server it display "ERR authorization failed". So we could not send or get any message to the other people.
Does anyone could give me some idea or the solution to solve this problem?

Hi, support that I have peer to peer network for 5 computer. The first computer name "A" and the second computer name "B". The first computer contain three user account such as "a1", "a2" and "a3". The second computer contain three user account too such as "b1", "b2" and "b3". I would like to ask you, how could I get the user name from computer "A" and display it on the screen? I don't want to use any third party software. I just want to get it via windows function. Is it possible? I don't mean that I don't hack the other computer but i want to share some resource to match the user name on the other computer.
Remember: only get the user name, not their password.

I have zonealarm installed and of course everyone knows, the vsmon services is basically the brains behind the outfit...anyways when I look at the services applet and go to options on vsmon almost everything is grayed out...so I went into the registry at
hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\services\vsmon\security
And in there, is a key called Security...It is a binary key and has a whole bunch of hex written in it. I imagine this is what is causing the services applet in XP to gray out all the configuration for it. Is there a way I can find out how to write my own Security reg keys like this for other services to keep people from tampering, etc?
P.S. I've already "googled" the matter lol but maybe someone knows the answer elsewhere. Thanks in advance.

It's the Access Control List for the service object. You can view the ACL for a service using the sc tool:

Hi all. Our Exchange server is Exchange 2003 running on Windows 2003 Server. The client machine in question is running Windows 2000, SP3, and Outlook XP (10). The problem I'm having is that his Outlook client isn't publishing his Free/Busy information to Exchange, despite the setting being set for 6 months worth of data. I've ran Windows update and Office update, uninstalled Office, ran RegClean, and reinstalled office, all to no avail. I know it's Outlook, and not Exchange, because an article on the net suggested deleting the user specific Free/Busy entry on the exchange server, and Outlook would rebuild it. I did this with my own account, and indeed, my Free/Busy entry was recreated. Not so with this particular user.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

You know how sometimes just talking a problem out helps you solve it? Case and point. I went back down to the users machine and deleted his Outlook profile, then rebuilt it. I assumed (incorrectly apparently) that the profile would be deleted when I uninstalled Outlook. It wasn't. Either way, this fixed the problem. Apparently something in his profile had been corrupted. Weird.

Hello,
I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software problem. But it only happens
in the Windows environment. What happens is the PC turns off power to the
monitor and CD drives after booting up to the logon screen or sometimes I
can get past that and actually get into Windows before it goes to sleep. It
acts like when the power saving options are set to turn off the monitor at a
certain time. I checked that when I could get on and it wasn't set to go off
for 30 min. I then turned it off all together. I also set the BIOS back to defaults.
After it goes to sleep, the PC is still on and the HD light is still on,
but after it goes to sleep, I can't move the mouse or strike a key to get it
to wake up like normal. I have to power it all the way off and restart it.
It sometimes will not even get to the logon screen before clicking off. It
just almost makes it to it. Very intermittent lately to when it goes off.
But, I've noticed it's doing it more often now where I can't get on at all
most of the time.
I've tried to reformat the HD and reinstall XP thinking I had a virus or
something. But, once I get into the XP windows looking setup screens(after
the first install restart) it blinks out again. It won't do that when I am
in the beginning DOS looking setup XP install screens. I even tried my
WIN98 disk and got through the whole install before it decided to blink out
again.
Other things I've tried - another video card in another PCI slot.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Is this enough information?

Hi, I used to have a problem like you too during the last 2 years. I found this problem because my monitor is too old (more than 4 years). I think the performance between the vga card and monitor is no more compatible together. Try to check vga card, or if you have a friend try to exchange your monitor for a while. If it has the problem it might become vga card, or if nothing problem it might become your monitor.

Thanks for the response Roath. The thing is, I've already tried 2 different monitors and another PCI video card with the same problem resulting. But, I might just try a brand new video card... not sure what to do at this point.

First off, boot into SETUP and disable all power saving features in the BIOS. Some BIOS types are not compatible with Windows. Let Windows manage the power, or disable it, too. While you're in the BIOS settings, check to see if the 'PnP-aware OS' option is enabled. Although I rarely need to change the default, on rare occasions it helps to set it to Yes. If this doesn't work, try moving the video card to a different slot. It really doesn't seem like this kind of problem, but you never know. Not all slots on the PCI bus are necessarily Bus-Mastering, and video cards need this capability. If you can, also try monitoring the case temperature. Though unlikely in this situation, since it shuts down so fast, sometimes excessive heat can cause the video system to shut down.
