I've been doing a lot of GDI programing while making custom controls and the thing that frustrates me the most is not knowing if you made a mistake.

Does any know of any helpful tools for GDI programming. GDI programming is almost like drawing with your left hand in a paper bag. It would be nice if there was some sort of testing framework / tool that would make it easier to see what you are doing.

Nothing against writing in a paper bag with the left hand....it's quite easy....especially if you are a left-handed person like me Wink | ;)

Hey guys,

I'm working on sort of a "proof of concept" program (using .NET and C#) that will generate random reply's to forum posts. My program takes a URL, which would be the URL of the page I am replying to, and submits a reply that is pulled from a word list. I'm trying to figure out the best way to open a connection to the page, and then put my mouse-pointer in the "message" box. I can't pass the message as a URL parameter or anything of the sort, because the forums are php/asp. So, does anyone have any ideas as to the best way to open a connection to the page, or on how to get "into" the reply box? To give you an idea, use my test board @ http://s6.invisionfree.com/Justin, and try replying to a post in the Concept forum - this is the process I want to automate. I just need some ideas on the best way to accomplish this...any suggestions are welcome.

Ok, well I figured out how to get IE started and go to the correct URL. I'm using System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("executable", "url"). Now I need to figure out how to "grab" the window, insert my text into the reply box, and hit the submit button... Suggestions/examples are appreciated.

Reading Outlook PST files

Hi guys and girls.

Do anyone here know if it possible to read and possible change settings storped in a outlook pst file ?

What i want to do is changing the SMTP server settings in my pst files on the fly. The reason for wanting to do this is that i move my laptop around on 6-7 different networks and then i always have to change my smtp settings so i can send emails..

I did not think that your SMTP setting were stored in the PST files. They are just files that contain the messages (as well as other types of Outlook data).

I belive your email settings are stored elsewhere.

Registry perhaps?

The Outlook PST file is a message store (Personal Store file). It doesn't contain any settings for servers. Those are in the registry under HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Account Manager\Accounts (for Outlook Express). I can't remember what path they're under for Outlook. Your best bet for managing those is the Microsoft Outlook xx.0 object library.

Outlook XP and 2003 doesnt store the settings in the Registry and i belive i read somewhere that they started encrypting it into the pst file..

Outlook express settings are stil stored in the registry

That is incorrect. I haven't auto archived anything in Outlook on my laptop so there aren't any .pst files on my computer. The SMTP Server on my computer is stored in the following hive as a REG_BINARY with a key name of SMTP Server:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Outlook\9375CFF0413111d3B88A00104B2A6676\00000007

There not in the PST files, but no matter where they're stored, my original recommendation still stands. The Microsoft Outlook xx.0 Object library is the way to go...

I want to change the cursor on the form to WaitCursor and at the same time disable the all the events on the form. I tried doing :
Cursor.Current = Cursors.WaitCursor
but this does not help. This neither change the cursor to hourgalss, nor it disables the events.
If I write : this.Cursor = Cursors.WaitCursor
This changes the cursor to hourglass, but does not disable the events. I can still click a button and write in a text box. The treeview, listbox etc are not disabled.
Can anyone help me?

All things derived from Control have a member Cursor which controls the cursor over the control itself.

Cursor itself has a static field Cursor.Current which represents the current cursor for the entire application (technically that isn't quite correct but its a simplification).

You do understand the fundemental principles behind "event driven" programming right? Setting the cursor is just a UI thing. You can change the cursor for a control or the application to anything which doesn't change anything about the input functionality. You seem to misconstrude what is going on when messages are being processed. While you are processing a message in the main UI thread, no more processing is being done. There is no need to monkey with the message loop...in fact you'll get into trouble doing that.

So what you probably want is something like this:

    Cusor oldCursor = Cursor.Current;
    try
    {
        Cursor.Current = Cursors.WaitCursor;

Hi,
I am using smart client model. I am running a windows application using IIS to make it distributed.The client terminal can launch the application through http:\\my system ip add\my virtual directory\application.exe. but recieves this error-
"This application is running in a partially trusted context.Some functionality in the application may be disabled due to security restrictions".

I have already made application.exe full trusted assembly in my system.I even attempted to do the same on the client system but it makes little sense to me.
I would appreciate some help.

Is it possible to manipulate a richTextBox's content without selecting the text to be changed ?
Or is there something like BeginUpdate(), EndUpdate() we find for ListBox ?
What I want is to avoid richTextBox flickering.
(For VB we have the LockWindowUpdate that works with richTextBox)

I have created an Office COM Add in using C#. I have a form that I want to display in PowerPoint when the user selects a menu item. The menu selection is working but the form doesn't appear. The code stops after .ShowDialog() is executed waiting for the DialogResults to return.

I have set the ShowDialog arguement to the active window of PowerPoint ppApp.ActiveWindow. I have tried casting the handle of the active window to IntPtr and passing that to ShowDialog but it complains it can't cast IntPtr as a System.Windows.Forms.IWin32Window.

Is this possible? Do I have to control marshalling under the covers instead of letting Interop handle it?

No it's not. You'll have to write your own print preview control to to do that. You'd want to look into the PrintPreviewControl class before starting on your own PrintPreview Dialog.

Hi,

I'm trying to access a SQL server in a newly created worker thread. This doesn't seem to work (can't even open a connection!). Is this by design? Can I only access the server in the initial thread?

You don't give us a lot to go on. What is the Exception thrown, how are you connecting. Us knowing these things might be useful..

Use Ctrl+Left/Right to switch messages, Ctrl+Up/Down to switch threads, Ctrl+Shift+Left/Right to switch pages.
