I'm definately a realist. Things break and the world turns... People are generally stupid but there are exeptions and so on. So lets sit down and have a ![Beer | [beer]](https://www.codeproject.com/script/Forums/Images/beer.gif) and ponder what can be done so that everything isn't going staight to hell...

If the god has the ability to prevent all evil and the will to do so, where the evil comes? If the god can't prevent all evil and doesn't want to do so, why call him/her as god?"

To add to what I said about realists earlier this week. The word "Realist" has been hijacked by pessimists because of their self-fulfilling prophecies.
I regard myself as generally optimistic. Things will work out, and if they break then fixing will be no problem, and if it can't be fixed economically then an opportunity to go out and buy a new better one has just arrived, and so on.
BTW, what did your post have to do with Italian translations?

When even VB developers say "the only purpose of C# is to give VB programmers a bit more respect", where do you find any optimism in Microsofts path?
(I could add a smiley, but I'm not yet sure I consider this funny)

By definition, I consider myself an optimist. Webster says that it is one who expects a favorable outcome or who has hopeful views. This by no means state that an optimist is naive in thinking that something wrong can happen. As I program, I have hope that my program will work. I couldn't imagine a programmer (or an engineer) would put something together and have the thought "this isn't going to work". Most of us won't put time into something that we know will fail. So aren't we all a little optimistic? I agree that there are projects out there that don't make sense, and maybe the application or implementation of it is pointless (and so I would have a pessimistic view of the whole project), but whatever the case, I'm going to do my best (and have hope) that the application I write will in fact work. As far as how realism fits into all this, I think in our standard method of thinking we take the practical way of solving a problem. I don't think some management falls into that category, but for us to keep up with things, we have to be practical. Otherwise, we'd never get anything done!
My 2 cents (which doesn't amount to much). Just a guy who enjoys programming.

Just thought I would look the words up and see what our friend the dictionary says, I was expecting better definitions seeing as I am an optimist.
Optimist
A person disposed to take a favorable view of things
Realist
A person who accepts the world as it literally is and deals with it accordingly
Pessimist
A person who says that O is the last letter in ZERO, instead of the first letter in word OPPORTUNITY
Engineer
A person who is trained in and uses technological and scientific knowledge to solve practical problems.

I think it's interesting that most responders seem to agree with the following notion about engineers:
The best engineers assume that the world is not an ideal place. It has rough edges that you have to deal with. It's a matter of pride that the thing you're making, whether it's microcode in a toaster or the O/S for a nuclear power plant, behaves correctly in spite of the perversities of the real world.

This is a definition obviously written by a non-engineer. Yes, that's what we do. IMO, the only word in the definition which relates to how engineers think of themselves is practical. Engineers take basic knowledge, with all of its idealistic assumptions, and turn it into something useful in the non-linear and chaotic universe.

I'd agree with that! If an engineer were to write that definition, it would most likely take up about four screens, be almost impossible to decipher and it would be so over complicated, that it would take an entire team of programmers just to figure out what they were trying to define...

Here is an Engineer/Philosopher's Definitions.
A Realist is a test to see if you are an optimist or a pessimist. If you think a realist is closer to an optimist than you are an optimist. If you think a realist is closer to a pessimist, than you are a pessimist.
An Engineer is an optimist without the delusions. He decides the world is not as he would like it to be and makes the world better. He begins as a pessimist, and is hopeful, because he is going to change the world.
