I am a technical advisor and consultant who manages many machines at many differant locations.
I am seeking information about developing a Microsoft Windows Patch Managment system. There are a few programs out there, but none will work in the sort of enviroment I have to work with.
I have an agent in development that sits on the user machine. (it performs eventlog monitoring and other functions and reports it back to my web service) What I would like the ability to is integrade a way to check if the local machine is up to par with critical updates, and then report that back to my web service.
I am guessing I would have to take a snapshot of what windows version and updates are already there and then compare them to some dynamic reference file containing all the appropriate updates...
Ahhh I'll step back and see if anyone has some experience in this.

In het kader van een onderzoek ben ik op zoek naar leden van virtuele teams. Dat zijn teams waarvan de leden samen werken op verschillende tijdstippen en plaatsen los van hun vaste positie binnen hun organisatie. Ik ben geïnteresseerd in de manier waarop taken verdeeld worden in een virtueel team dat aan software-ontwikkeling doet.
Als u aan de beschrijving voldoet, en dus in een virtueel team werkt, kan u meewerken aan het onderzoek. U mag de vragenlijst meermaals invullen indien u in meerdere teams meewerkt.
Het invullen van de vragenlijst duurt maar 5 minuten tijd. De informatie die u meedeelt in het onderzoek wordt vertrouwelijk behandeld. U kiest zelf of u al dan niet meewerkt aan het websurvey. U moet alleen u e-mail adres invullen op het survey indien ik u nog verder mag raadplegen in verband met mijn onderzoek.
Het onderzoek wordt uigevoerd aan de KULeuven, departement Sociologie, afdeling Arbeids- en Organisatiesociologie in het kader van mijn eindverhandeling.

A non-disclosure form would be required to be signed after your physical identity and location can be verified. For legal reasons, this is limited to people residing in the USA and legally allowed to work in the USA.
I am offering 20% of the gross revenues until 1 year after the app has sold 100 copies in a single month (estimated unit cost would be $150), payable monthly and reportable via the standard IRS 1099.
You would be expected to be available for upgrades, bug fixes, etc. as part of the contract agreement.

The application code was written in MFC C++ (Visual Studio 6).
The webserver is IIS running on Windows Server 2003.

Recently I've developed an idea for a new streaming music app using P2P technology. I've been recently exploring the concept and think it might have some commercial applications.
Basically, I'd like to develop a program similar to Streamcast and Allcast. There would be some big technical differences in how those P2P structures are organized and the P2P app I envision. Also, I've been working on an economic model to make this app commercially viable. I've been in consultation with several economic professors at different universities to discuss it's viability, and I've gotten some interesting feedback. My goal is for over the next few months to assemble a few partners and take a stab at building a bare bones prototype. Then, if we have a viable proof in concept, we could try to take it to the next logical steps. Maybe doing a trial run on a campus like Michigan State or the University of Delaware.
Unfortunately, I don't have the skill set to develop a prototype on my own. I'm an Electrical Engineering Grad from the University of Delaware with a Minor in Computer Science. My programming skills include C, C++, Java, Javascript, and HTML. But it's been a couple years and I'm rusty. Not to mention, while I've done a little C# and can pick things up quickly, to do something on this detail will require me learning much of the newer languages on the fly. As for coding environment, I haven't really decided yet. I'm leaning toweards C# and Java, because at least I know that somewhat.

My iPic project is an application that will create graph presentations. It's for personal projects and allow business person(s) to create a visualization for others to understand further as to what they are trying to explain/create. It's designed for pretty much anybody, a student can use it for a school project, buessiness people can use it for exchanging ideas for new products/sales. It's going to use all the features Windows XP can get, such as XP-theme easy to use user interface and the windows registry. Hi Folks !
I had posted this before, and forgive me, if anyone responded,
but I havent been back here for a while, way too much going on.
Here's my dilemma/request:
I have my home set up with x-10 gizmos everywhere, I went so far as to buy the
smarthome hal 2000 & recent upgrades that enable a box to have voice recognition,
responses via a voice engine, and create all sorts of macros to turn said x-10 gizmos
on and off. So far it is very cool and works relatively smart.
I also play the quake/RTCW games, and noticed that in RTCW some of the bots
when scripted to speak/play a soundfile they move their "mouth" to give the
illusion of speech.
What I need/want is some method to build a stand alone program, perhaps windows
based, that will imitate the functionality of the RTCW talking bot.
in Short, I'd like a talking head for my home automation speach recognition software.
I don't need it to be perfectly in sync, or have accurate emotions, just some
illusary functionality to perhaps give a personality to the computer house control.
It would be cool if I could custom "skin" it using some image format, but I'd settle
for a he or a she stock right now.
The idea is it sits static until the software "plays" a soundfile, or sound occurs,
then it "mouths" the sound it "hears", then stops.
For what it's worth, I know smarthome has sold a ton of the software, and the addition
of a talking customizable head would have a market albeit untested...
we probably won't retire on it but it could be worth our while and
i'd enjoy the collaboration of the project.
I am not a student, and this is NOT an assignment,
I want something like holly on red dwarf, just a head in the box to give onlookers
a WOW !
I don't C+
I can script unix and some perl and dare I say gwbasic.
I can steal & stitch html & java applets with the best of them.
I'm thinking this is best suited for a c type programmer ?

If you could snag some speech recognition source code, then it probably wouldn't be too hard.
Most speech recognition programs break the incoming sound stream into syllable sized bytes - delimited by the short delays in syllables. There are a (not too large) fixed number of these stored syllable types (some use words instead of syllables). The software maps the closest match between the incoming sound and a stored syllable type and then does a look-up to see what action is assigned to that match.
If you hooked your avatar skinning into those same syllable matching handlers then you could create a small image (just the mouth) that corresponds to each syllable and have that image BitBlt'ed to cover the current mouth of the avatar.
So, if you had speech recognition source code, the effort would break down into 99% creating all of the mouth shape images and 1% in telling the software that whenever it hears this syllable to BitBlt this image to these screen coordinates.

You fellows are looking at it from the point of matching the phonom to lip/facial
movement. I think THAT would be the ultimate in "reality" however from what all I have
read on the subject out there, there are several highly technical teams working VERY
hard to solve the issues to create a believeable human like virtual speaker.
While it WOULD be the ultimate, I am thinking along what I believe to be a simpler
model.
I will use the return to castle wolvenstein example, in the game characters (bots)
are actually line coded to "PLAY" a sound file (just a simple wav) when the soundfile
is playing, (and I have even coded just a music file to play) the character/bot
moves it's head, and it's mouth just "mumbles" moves it's lips and just some VERY basic
facial movement, NONE of which is in sync to the actual sound or phonom.
I found it to be believeable-enough at least for the purposes of the game because one doesn't linger watching the character you have other priorities in the game.
I am thinking that for now that would be all I need is just a mumbling head, perhaps
not the talking head, so it mumbles during a "what U hear" even for ALL sound playback.
However, what you are talking about WOULD be very believeable and it would have the
commercial potential, it may be possible to explain the project to smarthome.com
and aquire the source code to develop a real talking head, I would think that it
would be THE way to go in developing a commercial product. but way too involved for
my immediate task.
if you would like, I can put together a proposal to them along with non-disclosure
to see if they have a commercial interest in this. Would you be interested in working
on a virtual team for a project like this ?

Hello all!
I've been thinking alot lately about an alternative to the current point 2 point mp3 file sharing trend. The idea is this:
Individuals basically turn their computer into an internet radio station, broadcasting constantly with the software indexing the playlist. The main application would be able to search all currenlty broadcasting persons playlists so that they could find and listen to the song that they were looking for. The stream could then be rippped into an MP3. If the song that the user was searching for is not playing at the current time, then when the song becomes available it begins broadcasting to the computer of the individual that requested it. This eliminates the need for a cetralized server connnecting peers that are downloading. The only reason for a cetralized server is for a repository of currently playing song lists.
If anyone is interested in this as an idea, please respond.

this is a great idea. Have you looked to programs like clipInc? There are many programs to rip songs from radio. I do not know the features and if they support a search for songs etc.
