We'd need an Application.DoEvents after the newChild.Show because the top/left are not set until the new form is actually visible (very frustrating trying to figure THAT out...), and we'd actually need to check the MdiClient size, not just the ClientSize, or else status bars and what not would not be taken into account. The biggest problem I have with the current solution is that when the form is created, it shows at the original location for 1/60th of a second, and the flicker looks bad. No, this is simply a message warning you that your program exited normally. It can be useful, e.g, when you make a program that runs for a long time without no visible output. This dll is the Visual Basic Virtual Machine, introduced in VB6, and included in Windows 2000 SP4 and Windows 2003 Server. It was also included in Back Office Server and SQL Server, so if your target machines are running these products already, you might get away with it. You can check here[^] for other dlls that might be unnecessary, though. Some people think of it as a six-pack; I consider it more of a support group. You can't exclude it. These days I would recommend filing the PDW in a bit-bucket, and using Visual Studio Installer[^] instead. Or anything else. Stability. It sounds to me that VB will not allow it. I can exclude the "VB runtime and OLE automation" but it would be unmanageable to have to sort this bundle out and make sure they are all there beforehand. I thought it would be simpler to exclude just the one dll. Ah well, thanks for your advice. I was wondering if there would ever be a time when it wouldn't be necessary to include the .NET runtime (all 20 MB) in VB .NET distributions. The size of the runtime prevents me migrating to VB .NET, because it is so impractical for small shareware programs downloaded from the Internet. Is the runtime going to be included in future versions of Windows, for example? When obtaining NewsGator (a .NET based RSS aggregator) from their website, they check your CLR/.NET version from the Internet Explorer version string that gets sent as part of any HTTP request, and presents the appropriate download for you. That way users with .NET already installed don't have to redownload it. And .NET installs are more common than you might think, it seems (I've seen figures ranging from 20 to 50% of all desktops). If you have a website for distributing your apps, check your logs to see how prevalent it is yourself and decide from that. Well, I'd certainly check for the installed base in your own users/market, but I'd say that you do need to consider migration at least.
