Nice idea, but it won't fly here - this is a site devoted to Microsoft development tools and technology. But as of one minute ago the domain http://www.javaproject.com was available; I'm sure Chris would be willing to talk terms if you'd like to start such a website. It's really not a bad idea, in my mind, as I don't see Java going away anytime soon, and there are a lot of companies and developers using it. It just wouldn't be appropriate in this venue, and our nearly 1 million members wouldn't respond well to it.

Sometimes on long threads (particularly in the Lounge & Soapbox) as the indenting gets complicated with various branches it can be pretty difficult to determine for what post a specific reply is meant, especially if the parent post is not quoted in the reply.
Is there a current method to "back-up" from a reply to it's parent post? If not, I'd like to suggest one be added.

recently i had a design question that i was thinking about and went to the boards to see if anyone had some similar thoughts to mine as well as to post a topic of discussion about it. it was then i noticed that there was no forum for this. so to cut to the chase i think it would be great if there was a forum to discuss design and strategy.

the problem I see is when do we make the separation between actual design, and the underlying code.
most design questions belong in the current forums , and are language/API specific ( C++, Managed, ASP, ... )
or are too business critical to be discussed in an efficient matter.

I agree with this. However what sort of design are you talking about? User Interface design, the design of the application, data base design and so on.
Personally, I feel that things like this are massively under-represented... Which probably just goes to show that most people just don't give a sh1t about the subject.

Hi,
The idea of having a simple place to have specialized job offers it's quite good.
The bad thing... comes when sh*tty people places wrong offers or just offers to get e-mail addresses for SPAM issues like:

Maybe a way to avoid this is to force the offer to have a valid homepage address ( every IT company has its own web page  ).
Another issue, it's people that inserts there "I'm an student, I can telework, part time all techologies" , maybe codeproject should have a section for real freelancers, ... but in a way that shows the real experiencie of that guys ( which projects did you make, for which companies, gimme your personal web site address so I can check out more info about you...).
What do you think about that ?

Searches run from the search page nicely include their parameters in the query string, thus allowing the search to be bookmarked, etc.
Searches begun from the field at the top of the screen do not, however - so the search has to be run twice in order to obtain the bookmark-able URL.
On a side note, what is the non-google search found under Search Us! actually searching? Even when CodeProject is selected, it doesn't return the same results (or even... results) as those returned by the Regl'r Search.

That's already been tried, and the projects quickly outgrew the features of the CP article/msg board system.

Then we should change this system so that the servers are not fully occupied.
I have exact ideas how it should look like:
1. There has to be a list of programmers that want to join a dev group.
2. There has to be a list of planned projects. Not everybody should have access to it, you should have to propose the project to kinda "moderator" so he can add it and pay attention that there are not too many of them and no duplicates.
3. The projects leaders will choose their members from the list.
4. The projects starts and the members of that project have private access to the source codes and a secret developper forum.
5. (optional) A public discussion forum for the projects.

The thing about this is... SourceForge already does this. I mean, that's kinda the whole point of it. CP has a different focus (articles vs. projects), and seems to be quite good at it - why change?
That said, CP does allow collaborative articles w/ attached forums, so there's no reason why collaborative projects can't have a presence here. I strongly suspect that with the publication of "Official" CP code licenses (or guidelines for the construction of such), this sort of use will take off a bit more.

So.. the Admin (Chris and guys) can move the thread to relevant forums... whenever you find that the the thread belongs very well to other forum.
Atleast it will allow others to answer if it is in their forum
(I noticed this in some other 'nokia' forum, where the admin moved my message and replied to my message about the 'message moving' process)

At present we simply don't have the capacity to spendi all day every day watching and moderating forums.

You shouldn't need to spend all day watching the forums. You have about a million volunteers to do that for you.
If one of us notices a thread that's out of place, a quick email should suffice to let you know where it is.

Reduce the pains of compiling the mail by providing a button "Report To Admin" - that mails to the admin(s) for that forum
