I've got an XP machine here at worlk with 2 NIC's in it. This is being used to share my internet connection with my participants without IT seeing computers on the network that are not connected to the domain.
I have the 2nd NIC connecting to a switch which then runs out to a small internal LAN. What I am finding is many participants are spending their time playing online games and instant messaging. My requests for them to stop is falling on deaf ears at the moment. So I have given them all only user access and have uninstalled all components I feel at being used.
I would now like to make some changes to my machine (the default gateway) so it doesn't matter what they do on their machines they won't get through. I have searched using Google but my keyword selection must suck big time as I am only making hits to weird and wonderful sites or expert exchange where they want me to sign up to get the answers.
Anyone have any recommendations of software firewall products or route tables entries or similar?
From the stuff I have found so far some programs use hostnames so I could use the hosts file and point them to 127.0.0.1 but some programs go directly to the IP Address which would require something like a firewall. All help appreciated.

Need the access to research tasks we ned to perform on the donated systems we work on. Also to apply updates to Windows, Linux and FreeBSD installations. Next suggestion.

Identify naughty users. Whack their peepees.
Try the Sygate or ZoneAlarm firewall software. Though I prefer Sygate for my use, I think ZoneAlarm is more configurable.

under MS Windows 2000 Server, IIS
We have a web site: http://www.???.com
The physical root directory is: C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\???
We have another directory: C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\???\Users
Under this directory, we have hundreds of directories for users.
For example: C:\Inetpub\wwwroot\???\Users\john
for user john.
The problem is: if john wants to visit his home page, he has to type:
http://www.???.com/Users/john
Can we do something so that john only need to type:
http://www.???.com/john

I remember a AdminScript into Inetpub to create Virtual Directory, you can find it and edit it to look into Users folder and make a virtual directory for each folder. Or try to do it manually

To create a virtual directory, first create a physical directory in, say, your C:\.
For example: C:\MyRealDir\
Then,
>bring up MMC (Microsoft Management Console)
>File menu
>Add/Remove snap-in
>Add "Internet Information Service"
>Expand the nodes and navigate to the website of interest -- Mouse over and right click -- select "New"
>Select "Virtual Directory", which brings you virtual directory creation wizard
>Enter an Alias - whatever you like "MyDirAlias" for instance
>In the next step "Website Content Directory", enter "C:\MyRealDir"
Your virtual dir "MyDirAlias" is mapped to a physical dir "C:\MyRealDir". You put your html/asp/aspx/others files in "C:\MyRealDir".
To check, place a html file in your web folder, and access the site:
http://localhost/
Assuming you're playing with default host. If you've multiple sites on IIS, you must configure site port address using the snap-in - again, right click and select "properties" (one of these tabs)
Once port is configured (say, 5839 for instance):
http://www.mysite.com:5839
That's it.

Is there a maximum number of handles that any one process can use on NT (2000/XP) before the system collapses under the strain? I am investigating what looks like a printer driver handle leak - SPOOLSV.EXE is showing ... gasp ... 19,000+ handles (via Task Manager) and that cannot be right. A customer is having the same problem but they are also seeing weird Runtime Errors displayed (from which application is anyones guess), etc.
Handles are a finite resource right?

I need a book/document/article/website that could detail (regardless of the programming language, if required for examples) how the Windows operating system exactly works internally.
Is there such a thing? I believe I cannot become a better programmer until I start understanding this: how the OS I'm coding for is actually behaving/responding to this code.

Looks good, Mike. I was going to recommend Matt Pietrek's Windows Internals but was sorry to find that he has never updated it since 1993. It was an outstanding work in its day, but long superseded.

While spelunking on this server (which I've rebuilt a couple of times) I've located old .dbx files in old Administrator folders. I'd like to consolidate them all into the current Administrator (.001) folder and delete most of the stuff in them. Altogether they're using 1/2 GB of disk space that could be put to better use. My thought is to rename them all (as I believe each .dbx file corresponds to a folder), then either copy them to the current Admin folder, or use the import function in OE to grab them from the old Admin folders.
Which process will work best, if either of them will work at all? I'd delete them all, but there are some email registration confirmations I'd like to recover from them before I do. Thanks for any tips, warnings, references!

When I re-installed everything I always copied my Outlook Express data files with Explorer, then re-installed everything, ran OE once (to get the Identities folder created) and then put the old files in place again.
This always worked fine. I just don't know about the renaming thing you want to do. Using the import wizard will cause less trouble, but I suggest you rename and copy one file to see if it's working, then do all the rest because putting the data back this way will be faster.

Once i used GFlags.exe to enable win32 debugging my system not restarting. It hangs before the restart is complete. ie, blue screen for hours.., 4 hours passed when i am writing this message.

Do you have win XP/2003? Try last working configuation or put one back with the recovery console...

"The caption buttons for close, restore, minimize, scroll up & scroll down have some problem. They don't look like standard buttons. These all buttons are shown with some nos. eg. 4, 5, 3, 9..... and so on. This happens to all the open windows in computer.
In total if we can say that the five buttons have lost their standard symbols and appears with some garbage number for all opened windows.
The appearance in display properties is set to windows standard as well as there are not corrupted font in windows system. Win.ini and System.ini is also properly checked and there is no any problem found in the same."

Check free system resources and ... the Marlett font (which is mostly hidden but not difficult to find IF you still have it)
