I think process would refer to the memory that is taken up by the application/service. All running programs therefore would show up in the process list (umm lets not talk abt device drivers)
Only programs that need to interact with the user get classified as applications. Example of a process could be an antivirus monitor, web server etc which could have GUI's to be configured but can work without user interaction.
Multiple instances of an application like Internet Explorer can share the same process space (i'm not sure how its done  ) .
When you hit Ctrl-N on IE to create a new window you notice there is an additional application (ie IE  ). Whereas if you were to click on the IE icon, an additional application AND process would show up.

Does anyone know how to id what specific process has a particular file open? Is there a utility in the OS like 'lsof' or a utility with the MS compilers? If not can I do this programatically? Any help would be apprciated.
BTW. The reason I am doing this is because the network admin has a open file called 'hfind.tmp' on a SQL Server machine. Is this file possibly an indexing or hashtable for full text searches in SQL Server?

Another goodie is Who's Locking[^]. It even lets you close down the process that's locking you out.

not sure if this is the right place to ask this, but...
i'm writing a report on the output of a WinDump.exe file, and while creating basic sockets, i see
"win16384 <mss 1460,nop,nop,sackOK> (DF)"
i cant seem to find any explanation of what these bits in detail mean. whats does the (DF) at the end stand for?
and whats 1460? i take it "mss" is microsoft something...
all the tutorials i googled for only explain the SYN and ACK parts...
any help on this would be much appriciated

In our systeme there are some Applications that should not be ended from a user that does not know the Password. This Password is needed when the Application is Closed (with File->Exit or the [X] button on the top right) or when the Machine is shut down.
Under Windows 2000 when the user wants to shut down the machine, after 5 seconds there comes a window 'End Task' where the user can kill the task without typing in the password.
I've found the Registry Keys to set the timespan 'til this window pops up (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\desktop\HungAppTimeOut and HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\desktop\WaitToKillAppTimeOut), but is there a possibility that this window doesn't appear (maybe another registry key)?

The Windows 2000 server resource kit included a tool called rdpclip.exe which, accurding to the documentation, allows files to be transfered from the terminal services client and the server via clipboard.
1) Has anyone had this working?
2) Is it, or something functionaly equivalent available for Windows 2003 servers?

Remote Desktop/Terminal Services cross machine clipboard has worked for me when connected to XP and 2k3 server.

I typically run 5 - 7 instances of IE6, each pointed at a different site. Periodically an email comes in with a link in it that I want to follow. When I click on the link it almost always grabs the IE session displaying CodeProject, at least 95% of the time, even if that is not the most recently active. How does Windows select which instance of IE to use when opening a link in OE? It can't be random - this is too repeatable, and extremely annoying!

Hi all,
I am developing using Microsoft.NET 2002, and have also recently installed office system 2003 and a few other things like Macromedia development tools.
When I connect to the net I am getting a big delay after then clicking Internet Explorer, the delay being possibly as high as one minute. If I click IE a few times then sure enough after 1 minute all the copies of IE run.
It seems after the network connection has dialled and connected I get a big delay starting new tasks. All the tasks that are running prior to the RAS run fine and respond as well as always.
Any ideas, tweaks or news of similar experience please?

I'm working with a SQL Server 7 project, and using the Enterprise Manager to view the results of my code. Although everything seems to be operating correctly, when I open the Enterprise Manager and expand the console tree to reach my server I get a popup message that says, in effect, "The server \\MASTERCYLINDER is not known to be running." Clicking OK opens the connection well enough, but I'm wondering what I have to do to make it "known" that the server is running. The SQL Server is up to date, SP4 already installed. Any ideas?

SQL Servers are discovered using the NetBIOS browse mechanism, IIRC. Try the browstat command:

If it takes a long time to find out whether a server is running or not, it probably means that browsing is broken on your network. It doesn't work terribly well in a non-domain environment, we've found, particularly if the master browser shuts down. You might find that running browstat tickle will sort out the browser tables.

Interesting throwback for Win2K. I tried the browstat command - it's not recognized by the OS. But it's still a useful clue. I routinely block NetBIOS traffic at the firewall, so this may be contributing to the problem. Oddly, though, this didn't occur before I had to re-install SQL Server 7, and my firewall settings didn't change. Thanks for some good clues.

Actually, it looks like it's sending some message to your workgroup, but only sends to the primary workgroup. My PC here is on our domain, but the migration has stalled. The status display works for servers on the domain, but not on the workgroup (even though I've sorted out the browsing on the workgroup).
browstat is part of the Windows 2000 Support Tools, which are on your Windows CD (the SUPPORT\TOOLS folder, IIRC).

Found it. It looks to be far more handy for workgroups than domains, and this PC is a domain of one. Thanks for the reminder, though - I'd forgotten about that Support Tools folder. There's lots of goodies in there!

Hi.
Does anyone know how can I set the SNMP agent to send trap on CPU in windows OS using Windows SNMP service.
Example : I need that SNMP agent will send trap if CPU > 80% for X seconds.
Is there built in windows possibility to do that , or do I have to write my own code?

I've got two WinXP Pro machines copying a few gigs of data over the network (100mbps, with switch), and it's going *incredibly* slowly...

My initial thoughts would have been that your NIC(s) were set to full duplex while your switch was set to half (or is that the other way around) which is causing huge amounts of collisions. Did you make a change on the switch or NIC?
