Consistent lack of sleep has a long term effect on the immune system. Your body is okay with occasional lack of sleep, but if you regularly don't get enough sleep then the body cannot perform all the "idle time garbage collection" it needs to. Eventually, any illnesses you get will have a worse effect than they would have had if you had more sleep regularly.
