A quibble, not just DOS based systems. The NT kernel family kept this convention despite having no DOS lineage.
For bonus points, there are other reserved device names that most people have forgotten:
AUX - The auxilary device, usually mapped to com1, kernel debugging goes here.
PRN - The default printer, usually mapped to lpt1.
NUL - The null device, anything written here is throw away.
These, plus CON, and the better known COM[1-9] and LPT[1-9] devices are all invalid filenames still today. More amusing, they are invalid even in combination with any file extension, i.e. naming a file aux.txt is an error as well.
Anyone been around long enough to remember ox.sys or winaux.sys?

They were little DOS device drivers used in Win16 coding days to hook the AUX output and write it to the block of memory at 0xB000 that represented a mono monitor. All serious Win16 programming setups had both a VGA monitor and a mono monitor attached, so your debug output and the old CodeView debugger could run on the mono monitor.

Ahem. Just for future reference; typing in ALL CAPS is frowned upon. It is perceived as if you are shouting. Most of us can read lower caps, and those who can't have glasses or have adjusted their screen resolution to match their eyes.

I've recently setup a domain in my house with roaming profiles. I've been looking at the ntuser.ini file on the domain controller (where my profiles are stored). I assume it's purpose is to keep a list of folders to exclude from roaming. Some of the folders listed I would like to actually be roaming though.
My question is what is the best way to modify these settings? Should I edit the file directly or is there a program I can use to configure roaming profiles?

Hi,
we have an user account in a win2k domain. This account is used only by local services to log on and get access to the LAN and the exchange server, so we set "password never expires" and "user cannot change password".
This worked great for a few months. But today the local services cancelled with ERROR_PASSWORD_EXPIRED. So I called the admin, he said "don't know what is means, the experts are not here today" and reset the password. Now the servies can log on again, everythings seems to be okay.
1. How long is it going to run this time?
2. Why does ADS not do what it is told, are there any hidden setting?

How can I configure my Windows XP Pro laptop with multiple profiles, so that I can logon to 2 different NT domains?
I have a small domain at home which I usually log on to, but recently I have been using my laptop more and more at work and I really need to log on to the work domain when I am there.
I'm thinking I should be able to get a new choice in the Logon window that allows me to choose to log on to three items, instead of just the two that I currently have ("this computer" and "home domain"), but I'm not sure how to go about this without breaking anything.

You need to get your computer added to the domain at work, for it to appear in the login screen.
Or you can login locally then map a drive to your server using your work domain user creditials..

Try typing in the domain name at login, your going to need access to an account that can add a computer to a domain but this might work, and it might also switch you from your home domain to work. I agree that MS should do something to allow multiple network/etc configurations.

We have got a new server (W2K) on the company an new user names.
Everytime I try to open an old vb-project, I get the message:
"Access Denied"
the projects log-File shows:
"Line 86: Class MSComDlg.CommonDialog of the control CommonDialog1 was no loaded control-class"
Or the like. (I am translating the messages from German)
All works correct if I login as local Administrator.
How can I "access" "C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\MSCOMM32.OCX" with my user-login on the Server-Domain?
By the way: I think its the same cause for following problems:
- I cannot anymore give open access on the network of my local folders.
- Ugly problems in login to Visual Source Save (only starting as local Admin, but then not allowed to access the database on the network )

I am looking for a solution that will prevent resources (HTML and images) from theft.
I want to be able to have administrate the "system" so that text and photos can be viewed for only a limited amount of time (that I determine) while disabling common options like "View Source", "Save As", "Print" etc.
Does anyone know of a solution that can prevent content piracy?

It's still a web site. You simply cannot stop a determined individual from writing their own HTTP client (very easy with the WinInet library). Or there's always telnet:

After using my computer for few hours svchost.exe uses a lot of processor time on Windows XP. When I kill it, it respawns and behave properly. Is it a "feature" of Windows XP or did I something wrong  ?

To see what it is doing, in a "DOS" box type the following
tasklist /SVC
tasklist /FI "PID eq processID"
For some help
tasklist /?
this may help you to track down which process is at "fault"

Ev'ning All (OK, so I mean Roger, but I'm in a nice mood. The wife will be driving to a family wedding tomorrow, so I can get pissed as a maggot at the reception ).
My computer has started freezing (I need to press the power or reset button to have any effect on it) at random times. It can be a matter of seconds after Windows has started or an hour or so later after I have performed many tasks.
I don't believe it is the hardware on the computer as I have been in Knoppix now for over 2 hours with no problems. Looking through the Event Viewer shows no problems and I haven't installed any new hardware, drivers or patches in the past week or two. It took me 7 reboots yesterday to read 26 emails in Outlook using IMAP. Frustrating doesn't begin to describe it.
Wednesday I was downloading the latest Knoppix release while I was at work. My wife decided to use my computer (the effort of pressing her power button must have been too much). After she finished surfing the net she shut it down. At this point it froze. She then rang me and I got her to power it off. When I got home I powered on no problem then set the Knoppix download off while I went to bed. In the morning all was well, MD5'd the ISO and then burn't it to CD. Wasn't till that night that sh*t started happening.
I have NAV 2003 installed with latest sigs, can't get machine up long enough to scan. Any ideas?

Err, check seating of all add-in cards, check CPU temperature, check CPU fan working?
If that doesn't help anything, try booting up in safe mode (hold Ctrl before boot screen appears) and see if it stays up longer. If it does, probably some driver or service is running that shouldn't be.
Could it be NAV itself that's the problem? Perhaps the latest signature set has broken something. Modern anti-virus products on Windows NT/2000/XP/Server 2003 use a file system filter driver to process file requests for the on-access scanner.

I had something like this happen to me a couple of years ago. The machine would intermittently hang for no apparent reason. I did eventually determine that one of my memory chips had gone bad. Of course it would only crash when the system addressed a specific address so it didn't happen all the time.
I'd get a diagnostics program and make sure your memory is OK.
Same thing could be true if you have a bad sector on your HD, so ChkDsk it.

What OS is it? Win98 (both editions) was famous for this, especially on shut down. I've never seen a definitive analysis of the cause, so I suspect there are multiple flaws in the OS that can result in a freeze up. Installing NAV almost always destroys a Win98 machine, but since you've had it running successfully for a while before this started it is most likely innocent this time. New signature files are just data, and don't have any effect on the program code.
Most of the freezing problems I've run into have been resolved by re-installing various devices. It's a long process to isolate them, but the procedure is to disable devices in Device Manager, one at a time, rebooting each time, until the system runs for a long time without failing. If this isolates a problem device, remove it and re-install it. If not, re-install Windows.
Sorry if this isn't particualrly helpful, but this is the kind of problem that really needs to be fiddled with personally for me to diagnose properly.

A few people have had very good luck with it, but not me, nor any others I've met around here. When it is preinstalled as part of an OEM package, it usually works well, too. But never as an addon, and the huge database of workarounds and fixes Symantec maintains is good evidence that my experience isn't unique.

Windows XP Professional SP1 with all the fixin's.
It's been runing perfectly since I installed it 3 or so months ago. It could still be something in the hardware area, though since Knoppix 3.2 has been able to run for hours at a time I think it is more Windows specific. Could also be a driver but I doubt that as nothing has changed.
Only thing is my wife shutting down the computer while it was still downloading and creating the first freeze point.
I have more than enough space to install another installation of Windows. I will probably do this before blowing away my may installation.

Before installing a fresh copy of Windows, try using System Restore to roll it back to Tuesday, before this started happening. I did one this week with similar problems, except that there were also significant files completely missing from WInXP - in that case, the Restore function was one of the missing files, so a full reinstallation was the only hope. Perhaps yours isn't so far gone.
