Maybe from the aspect of security, but how many things get broken the last years everytime there is an update round?
And I would not put my hand on fire about the security.
First time a "new function" gets rolled out the chances of getting a security hole with it are not so small to be deprecated.

I agree. I have come to the conclusion that "security updates" are just another layer of bullshit rolled out by vendors. I get a security update from MS, and now I have advertising in my task bar? right.
As for the licensing thing, again I call bullshit. All the annual licensing thing is designed to do is perpetuate income, even if you don't need the "new features". I refuse to pay for an annual license to Office 365 when I only use 1% (if that) of the "features." It's utter nonsense.

The less people learn C the better off us embedded developers will be - we are already a minority and can pick and choose between companies and conditions.
And while yes, microcontrollers become more powerful, cost cutting is still a step ahead. Working on 3 kB of RAM, clocks well below 100 Mhz and having to guarantee response times in the tens of microseconds range is not for the average Go / Rust / .NET / Java / Web developer.
