My understanding is that DRAM needs constant periodic refresh voltage to maintain its data

So it's not act of reading or writing like an NVMe. It works kind of like an LCD does, in that the charge is sent to the LCD panel over and over with whatever the data is at that point.

In effect, the writes are always happening regardless, at least to my understanding.
