Why should heads roll because someone made a mistake? Is that the standard you apply to yourself whenever you slip up?

Possible personal health information reveal? If so, people will get in trouble because it is against the law. Has nothing to do with Griff, etc.
Here is the States it is a federal crime to reveal someone else's PII, PHI, or other health information without their prior consent. Not sure if that was the case here, but I think it was.

That depends on the seriousness of the mistake: in this case you have either revealed personal info to 8,000 strangers, or scared the **** out of 7,999 of them just as you prepare to shut up the surgery so they can't contact you to find out.
If your doctor texted you that message and went off for Christmas, how would you feel?
When you send data to anyone, you have to accept responsibility - and that means making certain that the right message goes only to the right person.

An SMS message is private so no personal information was revealed to anyone else. This was probably done by a junior member of the surgery staff working under pressure who accidently clicked on the wrong thing without realising it. It happens, in this case it was quickly fixed, and apart from a couple of people who made a meal of it and a BBC reporter trying to create a stir, nobody seems to have been too concerned.
I do hope that when next time at work you make a slip up that could have unwelcome consequences but is quickly corrected you take ownership and _insist_ that you are demoted or even fired. After all forgiveness is not an option and heads should always roll.

In answer to your question I would certainly be disconcerted and possibly annoyed for the hour it took to rectify, but I wouldn't make a massive fuss and I certainly wouldn't be demanding that "heads roll" (which means demotion or dismissal). If I demanded anything it would be for the person who made the mistake to have better training and their workload monitored to ensure they weren't stressed into making other similar (or worse) mistakes.
But it seems to be a growing theme (egged on by social media) to demand revenge on those who are usually doing their best to help under difficult circumstances and occasionally slip up. We should be kinder, and treat others as we would like to be treated ourselves....

Still reading this fantastic book, which continues to be fantastic: Modern Software Engineering[^].
There is so much great content in this book, but this from Chapter 3 really strikes a chord (as someone who evaluated the use of Entity Framework numerous times over 15 years but could never feel comfortable with it).
It's why many of us eschew, "Just use the latest library. It solves all your problems."
