Solution
Definition: A definition of ALTERNATES is INTERLEAVES
The remainder of the clue has another path to the solution. To wit:
A synonym of PLANT is INTER - as in to inter a body in a tomb.
A synonym of of FOLIAGE is LEAVES.
Put them together to yield INTERLEAVES.

Ah so, I get the last 3 sentences. Definition of alternatives is interleaves does not compute.

It's all part of the rules of solving cryptic clues. The clue has 3 parts:
(1) The definition. Found at the beginning or the end of the clue. Usually the first or last word but sometimes it's the first or last phrase or couple words. This is a loose definition or synonym of the solution.
(2) The road map (I don't know what it's really called). This is the remainder of the clue. You take synonyms, anagrams, reversals and what have you to construct the solution from these words and phrases.
(3) The number of characters in the solution - today's was (11). If it's multiple words then you show each word count in order, e.g. (5,3).
So, you have 2 chances to get the solution, but each part or reinforces the others. They are meant to be tricky and misdirecting. Only part 3 can be fully trusted. But, it's not a total free for all. There are rules that the setter must follow that gives the solver a chance.

When I first seriously started trying to solve these I found them nearly impossible. I'd solve maybe one a month - if that. At the beginning of this year though things started to click for some reason and I started regularly solving one or more a week. I keep improving. I solved 3 this week and 3 last week as well. I was even the setter 3 weeks ago by being the first to solve one! I don't often win because the game starts at 3 am South Dakota time and I'm not often up that early (late?) and even when I am playing in real time I am often beaten to the answer by another player (if I can even solve it), but every once in a while.

Tomoki Miyoshi - Tender Glow[^]
The last few weeks I've been playing I Am Setsuna.
A game that took inspiration from the old JRPGs, especially Chrono Trigger (which I've never played), but there's also plenty of Final Fantasy in there.
One of its many good features is the soundtrack, which is played almost exclusively on piano, which is pretty unique for any soundtrack.
It was composed by Tomoki Miyoshi and played by Randy Kerber, who is apparently an Oscar and Grammy nominee.
There are lots of great tracks to choose from on this soundtrack, but this is one of the more memorable ones.
You can actually find the whole album on YouTube and Spotify.
And I can recommend the game as well, if you're into JRPGs and mentioned games

I second the game recommendation. Really enjoyed it back when I played it. 
Never got the plat though... seem to remember one trophy seeming too grindy to bother at the time.

Probably getting 200 fluxes.
There's a trick to it though, that easily gets you 9 fluxes in a single fight (equipping all flux bonus talismans, eating a meal that boosts flux, and then simply casting support magic).
If you're training a bit and you go through the final dungeon a couple of times, constantly using spritnite with all the flux bonus talismans equipped, you can get a good couple of fluxes too.
All in all not too bad

I just checked and yes, it's the flux one, plus a couple others that sound like optional boss fights. They don't seem overly difficult, perhaps I just moved on to another game at the time.

No, I haven't played it for a while. I may go back to it, not sure yet. I ungraded to PS Premium (or whatever the top-tier one is called), so I have been played a bunch of random games that are available on that. Including getting the platinum for Wild Arms
