I found the solution to everything!
I mean, only government and economies and... not quite really, but I can point a finger somewhere!
In our "democracies" and "capitalist economies" (quote here since we know how imperfect they are) people can reward corporations/companies/governments with votes or money. People, while lacking a united front have an impact on the reward function. Meanwhile corporation/companies/government do what they want, competing fiercely for survival while trying to maximize their rewards.
You know what somewhat understood theoretical system behave just like that?
AI training, that's what!
AI has the same pitfall than our current government/companies/corporations in that it's hard to set a good reward that will ensure the system behave the way we want it to behave.
And, to be fair, this is still an open problem (i.e. not entirely solved), but we've learn some mitigation.
To summarize I believe AI hindsight can help us build better governments and economies, that do what we want them to do.

Except…. people do not want what’s good for society. They want what is good for themselves.
The megarich dont want to redistribute their wealth. The fat SUV owner dont want to own fewer cars. The shopaholics dont want to shop less. The youngsters hardly want higher taxes for the benefit of a growing elderly population.

There are times when I think that Arthur Dent (AKA the Sandwich Maker...) had the right idea.
More to the point, optimization of that sort works best when the data are not dynamic. If you have a system in which each point can move in the "solution space" in order to maximize its share of the resources, I have my doubts whether any static optimization function can work.
This means that you need an AI system that can dynamically change its optimization function - a meta-AI system.

Years ago we had a female Scottish Terrier, named "Ninya", that brought my wife a mouse that it had caught and killed.
There was no mouse trap attached to the mouse, and it was still bleeding.
All the Scottish Terriers that I have owned over the years were so aloof that they might as well have been Cats.
If I were you Griff, I would keep the cat well fed.

Normally he brings home live or freshly killed prey: mice, voles, rats, moles, squirrels, birds from Tits to Ravens, frogs, and fish. His best - or worst - was two rats as one mouthful : one dead and the other live. Not really sure how he managed that, he's only a small cat and these were fully grown Rattus Rattus examples.
He gets three pouches of cat food a day, plus treats ...

My daughter is in a life transition and has brought her two cats home with her. They are leaving "gifts" all over the place.
Years ago, my joke was that I wanted to run out of children at home before I ran out of hair. The hair is losing the battle. I now have changed my tune. I want to run out of left over pets before I die

Years back, a 17 yo wanted to get a parrot of some kind. Not a bird and not a budgie. I googled the parrot - average life span of 75 years. I'd have to live to 120 to have a running shot between me and the bird. I said no.
