If I remember correctly I think it is because of a law change that says that loyal customers should not pay more than new customers for the same insurance criteria which means that new customers are not subsidized by long standing customers.

I thought that at the time but I guess that the insurance companies thought they might be pushing their luck to do that.
The last thing they need is an investigation into their sharp practices.

Last year my renewal quote came through at a total of £35.06. I normally pay around £200 so I very carefully checked the cover and all looked fine. Nothing had changed - not my occupation, nor that of the 2nd named driver, no claims, no change of address etc etc. It was on DD so I waited until the money went out, and yes, sure enough they took just £35.06. Got the certificate, policy wording and schedule, with correct expiry date. And I double-checked a couple of months later, still insured. Got my renewal quote through for this year, back up to £190-ish. I've absolutely no idea what happened or why, but I've not complained about it.

Works well for me. I only fill the tank in one(*) car every 4 or 5 weeks.
(*) I have one car. My wife has two but she doesn't drive much. We have a 4th, the daughter's school car, which is an old beater we drive in the winter when the weather's bad.
