Southern California man says car computer on his new Tesla froze, causing vehicle to be stuck at 83 mph on freeway
Quote: He was able to make it off the road, and a few minutes later, the car rebooted. That's when everything seemed normal.
An officer with the California Highway Patrol helped Rodriguez get off the freeway, where he eventually had the car towed.
He said Tesla later told him they fixed the vehicle, but all they would say about what happened was what he said they wrote in the report.
"Diagnosed and found poor communication from charge port door causing power conversion system to shut off in order to protect on board components during drive," Rodriguez recalled.

I miss those plain old cars where the driver was still in charge. Ok, something like park assist is fine, but otherwise please let me drive my car myself

It'll get worse: The European Commission has reached a provisional agreement that all new vehicles sold in Europe will be fitted with a speed limiter as a legal requirement from 6 July 2022. The 2019/2044 regulation also mandates all new cars that have already launched be fitted with an Intelligent Speed Assist (ISA) by 7 July 2024
Once self driving cars are fully introduced, expect the human element to be legislated out of the drivers seat relatively quickly on safety grounds: Machines don't drive drunk, or stoned, or asleep, while reading a book, or doing makeup, or ...

I assume that they will tie the limiter into the GPS subsystem, so the actual maximum speed will be set according to location. I also assume that the road and speed limit databases used by the limiter will always be current.
What could possibly go wrong?

Not just that - it scans for speed limit signs as well, so reduced speeds in roadworks etc. are also obeyed.
I'm guessing traffic lights will be next.

A sales guy at my job had a VW ID3 on loan for a week while his car was getting repaired. This car was equipped with this speed limiter.
He was driving on a motorway when it went parallell with a small road for a bit, that small road had a limit of 50.
The other people got really angry with him doing 50 on the motorway, so he took off at the next exit, entering a small local road going the same direction parallell to the motorway.
Well, you can guess the rest...
At least the brakes worked.
You can also turn off the cruise control.

Remember seat belts? First the law was that new cars must have seat belts fitted. Then the law was changed so seat belts must be used. Speed limiters will (probably rightly) be compulsory to use in a few years as well, then illegal to disable.
Particularly in the EU, where the EU rules tend towards the most restrictive country law rather than being based on the least restrictive.

Years ago, I did a reboot at 55 MPH by pushing the clutch in and turning off the engine and then turning the car back on.

I already miss that electrics for driving system are separated from all other electrics, ie entertainment system. But if they did that telsa can't use the stirring wheel as a game controller

In normal, modern cars (except the Chrysler mangled Jeep) they are well separated with only a few allowed messages on the bus and private networks.
Tesla is designing cars starting without zero previous knowledge of automotive standards and why those standards are in place. Teslas are expensive, highly polluting and socially dangerous toys.

Friend of a friend with a prosthetic leg claimed multiple tickets dodged by “my leg slipped off and jammed the accelerator”.
Usually involved a dramatic fall from the car door and ripping the leg from the accelerator.

I have gotten two software recall notices on my 2021 Ford F150 in the last 3 months.
One causes the transmission to shift into neutral while driving down the highway when it thinks that the transmission fluid pressure is too low.
The second causes the integrated electric brake controller to fail when towing a trailer. (I do a lot of trailering.)
Just a few days ago, the center console display was all jittery, jumping around, changing shading (night to day to night). I had to stop, shut off the engine and restart to clear the problem.
My 2012 F150 rolled when EPAS (Electronic Power Assisted Steering) software took over the steering when I hit a big dip in the road. I ended up hanging upside down by the seat belt.
I will not ride in a computer controlled car without my seat belt fastened anymore--I don't trust the computers!
