some impediment to just getting up and walking out when things get tough (as they almost always do at some stage), and therefore encourages you to stay and work things out
It encourages you to stay in an unhappy position, which can result in feelings of desperation (especially when money is involved) and even violence.
In the Netherlands, over 50% of marriages end in divorce.
Besides, why wouldn't you want people to walk away when they're clearly not into each other anymore?
I'd rather be happy alone than unhappy together.

Maybe being happy together is even better, but there's no need to get married for that.
I'd say the impediment is about at big when you're just living together, you have shared stuff, like maybe the house, the car, maybe children or a dog, you'd still have to tell all your relatives, get things sorted out with the government (you can't just live together and then don't)...
You can share a life without getting married.

It's also a good excuse for one hell of a expensive party!
FTFY Laugh |
Cake: $10
Wedding cake: $100
Dress: $100
Wedding dress: $1.000
Invitation: $1 a piece
Wedding invitation: $10 a piece
etc. Wink | ;)

Plus a lot of guests are only invited because it's kind of a social obligation.
I'd much rather have a party with some close friends where I'm also not the center of attention.

All in all, I do not want to get married.
