Ok the UK citizens are quite anti-european (regarding EU and euro) - at least what recenty surveys tell me (no offense in any way!) - but the still are within Europe. At least geographically. Or have I missed something ?
Or to put it in an other way: Why are they separate?

Most people I know are not anti-european , we just do not like the fact that the executive is not accountable . It seems to be the French and the Germans steam-rollering everything on a whim of their local politicians , and there are not the democratic institutions in place to hold them accountable. We get kind of upset about that bit. Most sensible people are envious of the fact that most EU members have a higher standard of living than us , but we are not prepared to give up what we see as democracy unless the EU can demonstrate that it is able to act in a democratic manner , rather than the gravy train for politicians that it is percieved as at the moment.
Why is it seperate in CodeProject ? Buggered if I know. Why not ?

The EU is a Union of 15 states ... not just France and Germany. Everything ratified by the EU has to be passed by your Elected representatives (ie your MEP's Chris Patton and friends) or on a grandier scale (in case of treaties) by your government ( Tony Blair as friends). There is no railroading involved here ...

The European Commision is accountable to the European Parliment, the European Parliment is accountable to the State Parliment. Its all very accountable ...
The major problem with the UK and Europe is that the average UK joe believes most things he reads about the European Union. And given that some of the most popular papers in the UK; 'The Sun', 'The Daily Mail' etc are run by rampant Anti-European's hinders the whole advocacy thing.
People in UK aren't really anti-EU, its just they don't really know what the EU is all about. It gets very bad press and its very difficult to inform people proparily, and let them make and informed choice, when a large proportion of the nationial press is against you. I have hopes for the future though ...
Still though, I shouldn't bitch about the whole thing and get on with advocay ...

The Commision is accountable to the EU parliament and the EU parlaiment is accountable to the national parliaments. Thats accountability ? Its bad enough getting a politician to do anything normally but when that politician is two layers of politicians removed from the peopr he/she is supposed to serve then that is not what I call accountability. That is a gravy train.
If the EU is accountable , please can you explain to me why many of the commisionaires who were implicated last year in the corruption/incompetance scandal are still in place ?
Also there have been several attempts by various politicians , coincidently either from France , the low countries or Germany , to form a two speed Europe . This happens every time a vote by a democratic member state goes against them
Also your view on what the EU does can be tainted by what you get in return , witness the large amounts of money poured into Ireland , and the recent rejection of expansion by the Irish. The EU president was so concerned , that in the begining he even tried to talk about ignoring the wishes of the Irish anyway !
The concept of the EU is excellent , let down by the fact that it is not truly accountable to the member states. Now if several layers of local (national) government were given over to the EU , and they were truly accountable then I would have no problem. But as it stands it is a mishmash of a brilliant idea and incompetent , unrepresentative political structures.
I do not read the tabloids , I disagree with both their tone and their content. Chris Patton is a non elected commisioner , not an MEP.That is half the problem. A two tier system with one layer out of reach of democratic process.
I advocate GREATER influence of a European parliament , not a lesser one , a fact that seems to put me at odds with everyone. I criticise Europe but want it to have more power !
Still , got to laugh eh ?

I think what you've said is true, but it's because we're in the beginning of the UE. States don't want to loose power in front of an European parliament but it's the way we have to take to finally reach a confederated UE.
It'd have no sense to give the European parliament more power than it has since the people is beginning to understand what UE is intended to be and wouldn't support an European parliament with "foreigners" taking decisions affecting their country.
I think it's just a matter of time. Now, UE is thought to be something for the politicians and commerce between states and nothing more, I think in not so long, people will understand its final purpose and will believe more in what it represents. Then we'll be able to have a powerful European parliament supported by the europeans.
Apart from that, I think UK is doing a mistake by not joining the UE but thats my personal opinion and I'm sure people from UK has their own motives. I'd like to point that I actually work for a company who trades with UK and we're having losses due to the different economies and the difference between the Euro and the pound, this is not only our problem but a lot of companies are in the same situation as us and I don't think it's good for the UK since they are loosing a lot of potential inverstors, but as I said, that's my opinion (and I'm absolutely not a reputated economist)

I stand corrected. I was thinking in political terms. We always tend to speak about Russia as an East European country (in terms of it's people), but obviously most of Russia lies east of the Ural mountains.
Which would you prefer - Asia or Europe?
