I like the work (writing code - hell, I do it as a hobby). I just don't like stupid management decisions.

I do for money what I used to do for pleasure, but I keep both separated: my own time, my own projects. Company time, company projects. Because every time management ![Elephant | [mastadon]](https://www.codeproject.com/script/Forums/Images/elephant.gif) s up the personal and family time I lost is on me and me alone.
Burning out or ending with a divorce for my company's sake and for free? I saw too many friends waste their lives for the job with nothing in exchange. Some even took their own lives due to said burnouts / ruin of personal life.

Not work ethic - experience. Spending your free time to do this without pay sets an expectation in management that you'll work overtime for free. This WILL come back to bite you.

Just implementing Service Now would do that. I hate it.
About 3 years ago, a bunch of Service Now 'consultants' came in to implement at my place. After nearly 2 years, we switched over to it. During that time the consultants had zero conversations with development and, surprise surprise, we have a system that is not fit for purpose! When we pointed this out, we were told the implementation was for the benefit of the business, not developers. OK, so can development go back to their old way of working? Nope!

Six hundred columns? Sounds similar, but more extreme than, software subcontracted to India that the company (i.e., mine) paid for and discarded before use.
As for your Woe[] - I've not paid the price but I've seen the pattern and more than once. They hired a new CIO (from outside) who's done roughly nothing but has caused the selection and implementation of some software packages that make me wretch. Not to worry, a good deal of it is being used by outside contractors whom I've been told are "buddies" of his. To an extent, this patter has been embraced by the company.
The only good advice I can give to this sort of situation is my secret plan: "Next time be born rich".

(Bill was boss at SAP when they were buying everything then jumped ship over to ServiceNow)

Quitting is fine; quitting without notice is unprofessional. That sort of thing gets around, and often limits your future prospects.

I watch these with some interest. I am not up nearly early enough (USA) to participate, nor am I usually smart enough to come up with a solution. Yet, I often try to figure them out before going and looking at the real solution.
Today's in my opinion (Which isn't worth anything) is an exceptionally well thought out one.

Thank you - I do try and avoid going down the usual anagram path when I can ( if I'm feeling creative ) with the plethora of online anagram solvers around the clues are normally solved in minutes. It's difficult coming up with global cryptic clues as different countries have various methods of constructing the clue. Thanks again.

and if you use OneDrive (and I do for non-confidential files I what to share between my three PC's - desktop, Surface Go 2, and the Surface 3 Pro in the kitchen for recipes) then your files will be listed, you can edit them in an online version of the "right software" and it'll update on your other devices as you'd expect.
I just tried it on Chrome via Android and it works, though the online Excel support via OneDrive doesn't work too well - there isn't an obvious "sheet view", they just all become "pages" within a "flat view" and I'd be reluctant to save any changes I made there just in case.
But ... if you need a document while on someone else's PC and they don't have Office then it could be really useful.
