Wrong algorithm = slow program. No compiler can optimize that away. That's where most of the optimization happens. Also, that's why I like my RISC processors so much. There often is only one way to do something, which makes things very straight forward. The clever part is your algorithm.

I already had that discussion with a professor long ago. First he thought that I was an arrogant (censored). A few talks later on how I could possibly beat the compiler, he always wanted me to write papers on these ideas. Most of them were quite evil hacks which go against many other holy commandmends and dogmas. If used with caution, you can get away with that and go where no compiler can follow.
I have lived with several Zen masters - all of them were cats.

His last invention was an evil Lasagna. It didn't kill anyone, and it actually tasted pretty good.
