Just to make it a bit less intense in your mind:

LN2 = -196 C
Dry Ice: -78 C - I'd say this is what they really intend.

Both are readily available, the LN2 is something we used in our labs (in huge cryogenic storage cylinders) constantly - both as boil-off (super dry N2) and the liquid (mainly traps for Ultra High Vacuum equipment) and it's no big deal, sort of, but then, again, we were a lab.

For those of you who remember, ice cream trucks kept their goodies frozen as they drove around with chunks of dry ice (those little trucks were insulated - not refrigerated).

That being said - I'd propose that the set of locations that can maintain the dry-ice cooled environment (and required deliveries several times/week) are smaller than those who just have plain refrigerators/freezers for drug storage. Clearly, some logistical changes will be made.

Personally, RNA vaccines sound rather scary. Yes, I realize I'm making that statement based on a layman's understanding of genetics and biology and don't want to start a SB discussion, just being honest about how I feel about it.

Given the short development timeframe, 90% is pretty amazing, and could be enough to stop global lockdowns. If the R number dropped to even close to 0.1 due to the majority of people being vaccinated it'd start to die.

And hopefully, take the anti-vax idiots with it ... Sigh | :sigh:

Agreed, taking the anti-vax idiots out of the equation would be a bonus. Poetic justice and a very normal process of natural selection. Survival of the fittest and/or the most savvy is just the natural way of things.

Not to turn this into a political discussion, but I did tell some people I was fully expecting a pharmaceutical company to announce significant progress shortly after you-know-who got booted out of office.

I just didn't expect one such qualifying announcement to be made less than a week after the US elections.

I'd say it's probably just coincidence - they are all working flat out to be the first to release, as that's where the big money is to start with. The really big money is in the long term maintenance doses of course, but the "market leader" will get a big share of that!

Ummm...those are all the same...?

A vaccine that's 90% effective is a lot better than some vaccines that are in use today. I believe the influenza vaccine that's offered every year is typically rated at something around 40% effective. And yet they insist everybody gets it.
