I think it's a sad truth that many people are together just to not be alone.
I've been there and found I prefer being alone over being with the wrong woman.

It can be worst... You were together for years, were happy, made good things... Then the kids grow old and left and you find you have nothing to with him/her...
So you actually enslaved yourself to the kids and not really lived a life... and it seemed that good because you had the perfect partner just for that - but nothing else...
