I have a graphic in my application that depicts the name and operating state of a device. For a new product, name construction has changed and some of the operating states are new. In my C++/MFC days, I would have spent hours or even days reworking component graphics and their drawing code. With paint.net[^] and a few very light touches to the XAML for the graphic it looks great, no code changes were required, and it took less than an hour.

No sorry but ... WPF does not really rocks  No visual inheritance supported like borland invented it before more than about 20 years ago with vcl

For traditional desktop development it's really cool, especially like your scenario where you need to customize the look and feel of the controls. I've done plenty of WPF and after a 2 year break I'm currently working one a WPF app again

That is definitely the case here. This is a Windows app running on an industrial PC, acting as the touch-screen control panel for a commercial inkjet printing system.
