I once wrote an HL7 message processing engine to receive messages from another HL7 engine in another department. Every time the message stream failed they were on the phone to us, and upper management, complaining that our engine had failed. Over 4 years this happened more than 10 times. In only 1 of those 10 times was it our problem (because of a disk space issue on the server due to a separate application run wild) - it was otherwise always their end that had failed. Our end would report the message flow stoppage as it went on, getting more insistent and vigorous (with emails, etc.) as the stoppage lengthened. However, since we logged and reported the problem by email and they called upper management on the phone (repeatedly), our engine was flagged as unreliable, not theirs! Mad |

My code was only updated once after deployment to add some extra support features due to their engine changing it's protocol slightly. Cool |

Perception and reality are often quite different! Unsure | :~
- I would love to change the world, but they won’t give me the source code.
