Simplified:

You use the same type of throughput as 'normal' digital cameras (i.e, not DSLR) - the image on the sensor shows on the screen (or in eyepiece) and when you take the shot, it is captured directly, as is. A bigger better sensor (the norm for point-and-shoots is 1/2.3" diameter and the usual DSLR bells and whistles that Japanese cannot help but put on everything (K.I.S.S. is not in their culture).

The 'mirror' versions are really digital knockoffs of the film-based cameras with a digital sensor instead of film. In these, during the period when the film was being exposed, the view of the scene disappeared - there was also the vibration of the mirror which could, under certain circumstances, be a concern.
