Yes, it is true. While it happened, CPUs were sometimes clocked higher than their rating, the word "overclocked" was not used. It was also not that common because CPUs usually did not have heat sinks back then. The IBM PC did not have a heat sink on its CPU for several generations, not until the 80486 become the standard processor. I remember when I bought a higher clocked 80287, they called it "turbo-speed" I believe. The standard chips were clocked at 6MHz and this one was 12MHz and it was unique in that it had a heat sink attached to the FPU. The stock ones did not, nor did this 80387 chips.
