Starting next Friday, they're going to push Windows 10 onto over 5000 systems.
They have FOUR guys that are assigned to "putting out fires as they arise".
The first fire has already come up - VPN no longer works for anyone because they're preparing to update to Windows 10.
After that fiasco has taken hold, they're going to update all of the SQL boxes from 2008R2 to 2012. I don't personally know about the other sql server boxes, but ours has over 500 SSIS packages running. From what I understand, we have to migrate each one of them to be compatible with 2012.
The first description that comes to mind starts with the word "cluster"...

And, a great deal of work to be done for which people will be paid.
Is there a path to upgrade SQL 2008R2 to SQL 2012 that will auto-migrate the SSIS packages?
Is there an option to write a 'conversion' utility to upgrade them?
If the nodes are never upgraded, what is the long term outlook? Will the security packages be adequate? Will the application be supported by the vendor?

As to SSIS, yeah it's not meant to be used on the scale you and I are trying to use it. But ya can't convince management about that.
We went through that and then 2012 to 2014 as well... after cloning nearly everything to a second project first.
If you need to move a bunch of stuff from point A to point B, then a train may be a good idea, a few large trucks may also be a good idea, but trying to use a fleet of sedans is not likely to be the best choice.

Each SSIS package needs to be upgraded. I've done this before, no real quick way to do it, it's kind of a PTA.
Common sense is admitting there is cause and effect and that you can exert some control over what you understand.

BACK UP YOUR DATA FIRST.
I have seen this go horribly wrong for some colleagues. Doubt your scenario is the same as ours was, but it was not pretty. All good now, but painful lessons were learned by some.

My plan is to copy the existing data to the new server, and work on it on the new server, leaving the old server up until we're done.

They are outsourcing the four guys to do the fire fighting, JSOP is predicting a cluster... and PieBALD is betting on a train wreck.
JSOP used to bitch about VB then there was that horrible end user tool he had to train on, we can now look forward to much gnashing of teeth about SSIS upgrading.
