Interesting that you use that for an analogy as, depending upon how you look at it, you could be making a point contrary to your anecdote. If that cat is the employee (since it's a cat, it's a lazy one  ) all its needs are being met by the boss. But you're correct, "smartest" is relative and fluid. I've found that the "lazier" employees know all the shortcuts to getting the job done faster as it gives them more free time. Now that can be counter-productive as faster isn't always better....
At the end of the day, most people's motivation was distilled by W. Edwards Demming. Everyone wants to do a good job. Now the definition of what a good job is varies from person to person, but can be influenced by a good leader and culture.

Well that's all fine and dandy, but by virtue of quickly dismissing it and condemning it like that, it would put you in the same category that I mentioned myself may be in towards the bottom of it where I simply just may or may not look down on people. Which is to say, if it's really to be considered stupid, then so are you for acting the same way.

But seriously, my mind goes at a billion MPH, and I find that I arrive at a conclusion long before everyone else, and that despite my best effort, I can't hurry everyone else up to the same conclusion, so while they're plodding along making committee decisions, I've got the code about halfway done in my mind and I'm ready to start actually writing it.
That doesn't mean I think I'm smarter than everyone else, it's just that I instantly start mentally evaluating patterns and methods and coming up with a way forward, and then want to start implementing it. I usually have to wait for the requirements to catch up to me. Usually, I hit it right on the mark, but there are times when I have to make minor adjustments to account for the committee's lack of foresight and clarity.

I guess to best put it, it's more like awareness I'm speaking of. Not even so much speed, since I can be slow myself at times. Some people are just more aware than others.

I get where you are coming from.
The challenge for you is the improve your ability to convey your solution to the group in a manner that does not put them down. So while you are clearly smarter at getting to the technical solution you are not as smart with regard to expressing your ideas clear enough that the others understand your solutions.
Also a campaign of trying to convince everyone that you are right is a path to eventual misery. Sometimes you have to take the committee solution even though it is less optimal than your own solution. It's a challenge, but if you can't clearly present your solutions as superior then you need to be part of the team and work towards the team solution.

Todo? I judge people for who they are and not their intelligence. Work or even problem solving might be low on their priority list and I accept it. I’d prefer to work with quality people than people who are not; over smart people or people who pretend to be smart. I’d also prefer people not send me a gigantic email signature. I got one the other day that was 11 lines long, with a picture, and a disclaimer at the bottom!

It's not from a place of judgement. Some things simply are. It's not an attempt to degrade the quality of a person either, but selfishly I can be impatient and want to continue the mind journey and I just complain about it apparently. Which is a fault of mine.
Anyway, totally feel ya on those email sigs btw.

Sometimes these realizations mean that you need to go to a different room, so to speak. Other times these realizations can really inspire growth. And introspection. And revelations.
If you are the smartest guy in the room, are your criteria accurate? Are you measuring them correctly? Maybe you just need to think differently.
Or maybe you really are the smartest guy in the room; it's certainly possible. So consider this: what will you do with it? Being the smartest guy could mean that you're completely delusional. Or it could also mean you're truly in a position to mentor somebody else. Believe me, you can learn even more by teaching / mentoring / coaching / whatever.
Something to think about.

Thanks for this. I think you may have hit the nail on the head here. I do think I need to continue my own growth though from people I consider more knowledgable than myself. It's just been my go-to for that has been books rather than those around me. But, your post rings totally true man. Thanks for your perspective.

Perhaps you need to continue your own growth by figuring out new things out for yourself. Don't just try to find someone to feed you knowledge, go out there and make some for the rest of us.
And have you used your vast intelligence to help those around you learn and understand things? That's a skill all in itself -- how to teach people at a rate and level they can grasp, without putting them off, and without installing yourself on a pedestal as The Expert.

You know you're absolutely correct. After thinking about it over the weekend, I've come to realize I'm just in a toxic environment and my weaknesses have shown because of it. So, I very well may just have to change environments and try again, so I can start being a good person. Anyway, your post is spot on.

I can confirm it. Training the new co-workers in previous company was sometimes totally challenging me, how to explain that so obvious for me in a way that they understood it.
You might not learn more technologically speaking (although you still do it) but what you do learn is social competence, how to communicate better and other staff that maybe will not increase your knowledge but your wisdom and make it a not a smarter but a better person
