I have not chosen it as an option on voting, but sometimes, very, very occasionally I will do so. It is the exception to the rule.
Normally I just go back and find a site that doesn't do this.

That's the only thing for sure: When redirected from a google search and a site wants me to sign up before showing me ANYTHING, the site is blacklisted and left.
Ad Blockers are a medal with two sides - Ads DO generate income for sites and this allows us to consume them for free.
As long as companies are stupid enough to invest money in online ads that have a return of 0.01% or less, we will have free websites. If we all reduce that even further, sites will be more and more a registration-club and many will start to collect fees because it's the only way they can keep the servers up, pay the maintenance costs and their people who make the site.
I do use AdBlockers like most people do, but I do accept ads on sites that are important for me (mostly developer sites). But I block ads on sites I hit "random" through google if they have "too much" of it for my taste.
Use your AdBlocker wisely and you can set signals. Worst thing one can do is "blindly block everything everywhere" - this leads to trouble on the sites' finances and you shovel the grave for the site. If the site is important to you, you do not want this. Act like that.

Unfortunately, turning off Javascript is a method that won't work most of the time. Those websites are "clever". We can't see any content at all if we turn off Javascript. Use Inspect Element on FireFox and delete the whole object instead. However, the website might show only half of the article content if we are unregistered. That's when I left and never returned.

Do you thing web designer is evil? Not so fast! Guess who ORDER him to make this popup! Yes, all those smiling CEOs, fat idiots who think they rule the business. They used to f*** people, they don't care about you - they care about how effectively they can milk you. And of course they LOSE! Because people wants POLITE ATTENTION. That's why last 10 years banners, popups, annoying advert MEANS NOTHING - we just ignore it mentally. But CEO... those old dogs... they still rule like they are in 20-th century! They are outdated, industry needs fresh people and stop annoying people with flashing advert. Heya!

I leave all sites that pop up advertising immediately, as well. All of the geek developers out there that use strong arm tactics, just aggravate me to no end. Sites with advertising on the side bar are OK. Then I have the choice to look at the ones that I am interested in and ignore the others.

I would blacklist the site entirely. Not just the pop-up signature.
If it's really something I "need" instead of just something interesting, I might contact the site's admin to complain. But that's only ever happened twice in my lifetime. Nearly always such site, using such tactics to "force" a signup, I can live without.

If i need the info from that website: close popup. If not, register or look for similar site.
If general website, and I am not very much interested, close the browser window and move to similar site.
If I have little time or not in good mood, still close the browser window and move to similar site.
In summary, it depends on many factor for the same website and complicity of signup process.

I first try to close it, if they don't let me, I go ahead and set display: none; to the element that contains the popup. No need to include third-parties, when I can take care of them myself. Gangsta!

I have no problem with a site that demands registration or payment before allowing you to access content. What I can't stand are those that will allow you to access the site for long enough to read part of the article, and then ask you to register or pay.
It is the same marketing technique supposedly used by drug dealers - "the first one's free".
If you have an important point to make, don't try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time - a tremendous whack.

Just to give voice to the flip side of that: they're giving you a sample so you can determine if the content is worth the trouble/cost of signing up.
Personally, any excuse to get angry an strangers is always a opportunity not to miss.

Drugs are addictable so the trick works without a problem. However making a website content so wanting as drugs do, should be extremely hard, unless it contains pornography.

If the site is interesting I try closing the popup only. If registering makes sense / I decided to use that site anyway then I sign up.
90 times out of 100 I simply GTFO since it's obviously a trap.

Sign up using Mailinator or TenMinuteMail and ignore it from that point.
But mostly, it's the first or second option - few sites are unique enough that I can't get the info elsewhere.
